To improve the user experience of their Web3-focused stores hosted by the platform, crypto-friendly e-commerce giant Shopify has introduced a suite of blockchain commerce tools. Announcing the move via Twitter on Feb. 9, We've developed some new tools to let you build token-gating apps for Shopify shops, according to @ryancreatescopy, the designer for the Shopify blockchain team.

Expanded crypto wallet connect capabilities and "token-gating" application programming interface (API) tools have received special attention. Since June 2022, the latter has been in early access beta status and was previously only accessible to a small number of merchants.

With token-gating, all applicable Shopify merchants can now set up their stores to dictate which token-holders can and cannot gain access to exclusive products, non-fungible token (NFT) drops, and benefits. The tool verifies user eligibility via their connected wallet and is being touted as a convenient way for NFT Merchants to reward certain users or add exclusivity to specific products.

Shopify has recently taken a major step forward in terms of expanding its crypto wallet support by integrating with the Sign-in with Ethereum (SIWE) protocol, led by the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) and the Ethereum Foundation. SIWE provides a secure way for users to sign in and authenticate their Ethereum accounts and ENS domains without having to share their private information, such as names, phone numbers, and residential addresses, with third parties.

This move is especially significant for Shopify, as the company has faced criticism in the past for its handling of user data. In April 2022, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Shopify and hardware wallet provider Ledger due to a major data leak in 2020.

ENS Labs Community Advocate @Sadaf.eth generated excitement in the Ethereum community on February 9th when she highlighted the SIWE integration with Shopify on Twitter and linked to developer documents that explain how to incorporate the tool into Shopify stores.

By using the Statement Generator prop, merchants can alter the statement that appears in a Sign-In with an Ethereum message. This function takes the address of the wallet that has connected, allowing merchants to tailor their message statements to better reflect their brand.

By integrating the SIWE feature on Shopify wallet connect, users can now click a “sign-in with Ethereum” button to securely connect their addresses via SIWE’s partnered intermediaries such as Coinbase, Fortmatic, WalletConnect, Portis and Torus. This provides a convenient and secure way for users to access their Ethereum wallets.
