Do you remember those sci-fi movies with incredible graphics?

Sony launched a device that allows you to create and manage such sci-fi avatars of yourself, which you will employ in various metaverse applications.

Sony has unveiled a set of six motion-tracking devices that will allow a user's body to control the motions of an avatar. This set, known as Mocopi, will enable mobile motion capture by wearing sensors around a user's head, waist, wrists, and ankles.

Sony has come a long way since investing $1 billion in Epic Games to convey its interest in the metaverse. This year, it partnered with NFT Technologies to link live sports data to the vast potential of the sports NFT market. Meanwhile, this device will open a new chapter in metaverse adoption, which will lead by Sony.

So, let's take a quick look at the Mocopi device and understand its use cases and functionalities, as well as how you can get your hands on one.

HOW "MOCOPI" WORKS

Mocopi is an abbreviation for "mocap" (motion capture). Sony stated that it tracks body movement using six colour-coded motion sensors. This technology has a lot in common with filmmaking in several ways. We know they utilize motion capture equipment, and the data they obtain should be recorded. "Mocopi" tracks body movement with a few sensors thanks to Sony's unique technology.

Sony will release a software development kit (SDK) in mid-December that will allow users to connect motion capture data to metaverse services. This SDK, according to Sony, "expands the usage of motion data for activities such as full-body monitoring." In other words, new items and services will be introduced to the market in the near future. At this point, we believe they will refer to the metaverse and fitness.

Sony also released a how-to video at the same time. In the video, Sony explains how the sensors and app function. The video explains that one should simply place the sensors on their body and calibrate it. Your avatar will then mimic your movements. Despite the fact that the video shows how amusing it is to see your avatar dance, there are some motion capture concerns, such as jitter and foot slipping.

According to Sony, this is a product for the metaverse. However, they can be used to create animated videos as well. Also, Mocopi will be released in late January 2023 at a retail price of $360. However, we will be able to see it in action prior to its release between December 3rd and December 18th, when Sony will display the tech at Virtual Market 2022 Winter.

What else to expect?

Recently, Sony filed trademark applications for NFT and Blockchain technology, signalling its plan to explore these industries as well, most likely for its PlayStation video gaming platform.

This initiative will boost revenue for the technological behemoth Sony while also increasing public adoption of these technologies.
