Russia to start use of crypto for international transactions
Starting September 1, 2024, Russia will launch regulated trials for crypto exchanges to simplify cross-border payments.
The National Payment Card System (NPCS) will handle these crypto payments. The Central Bank of Russia will oversee the updates.
Russia has taken this movie because Russian businesses are facing issues with international payments due to tough sanctions from the U.S. and allies.
Finance Minister Anton Siluanov admits: "We still haven’t found a solution for this." The situation is urgent.
Russia’s Central Bank had previously wanted to ban cryptocurrencies but now sees them as a way to bypass sanctions.
This trial is part of BRICS’ strategy to reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar, aiming for "de-dollarization" with alternative payment systems.
On August 8, President Putin signed a law to use cryptocurrencies for international payments. The Central Bank will supervise the new system.
