This is what may be India's most massive data breach.The personal details of over 81.5 crore citizens have been exposed. The source? Allegedly, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). This alarming breach came to light by the American cybersecurity agency, Resecurity. Their team noticed a 'threat actor' using the alias 'pwn001' posting a thread on Breach Forums. This forum, which describes itself as a premier data breach discussion and leaks platform, offered access to the records of a staggering 815 million Indians. To put this into perspective, that's roughly ten times the total populations of countries like Iran, Turkey, and Germany.
The hacker, 'pwn001,' claimed to possess Aadhaar and passport information, alongside names, phone numbers, and addresses. This data, as per the hacker, was obtained from the Covid-19 test records of individuals registered with ICMR. As evidence, 'pwn001' posted spreadsheets containing Aadhaar data, which upon analysis, were confirmed as valid Aadhaar card IDs.
There hasn't been an official response from ICMR or the government as of now. Reports suggest that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is expected to investigate once a complaint is filed by ICMR. High-ranking officials from multiple agencies and ministries have been engaged to address the situation. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been activated to minimize the damage.
