On October 18, Universal Music Group (UMG) unveiled a new association with BandLab Technologies, a social music creative platform. The prime objective of this partnership is to boost responsible practices involving Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the industry, particularly in terms of its ethical use. The goal is to safeguard the rights of artists and writers, which has become a growing concern due to the increasing use of AI in generating content and images. UMG's announcement emphasised its commitment to ensuring the protection of artists' and writers' rights.
Michael Nash, UMG's Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer, shared his views on the collaboration. Nash stated that the two entities aim to establish a responsible framework for the utilisation of AI in creative endeavours. Their objective is to enhance human creativity and culture while simultaneously safeguarding the rights of artists and writers. This approach ensures that the utilisation of AI does not impede the rights of artists and writers. UMG's overarching aim is to harness AI in a manner that minimises risks and aligns with future requirements.
UMG's recent actions in the context of AI are not isolated incidents. Previously in August, UMG engaged in discussions with Google to explore solutions for addressing AI deep fakes by developing an AI-related tool. UMG and Google articulated that this solution would grant permission for the legal creation of AI-generated tracks while upholding the rights of artists and writers. It's worth noting that the conflict surrounding AI has extended to the legal arena, with artists, musicians, and creators engaging in copyright disputes. In August 2023, a U.S. judge declined to apply copyright to AI-generated art. Hollywood has been embroiled in an ongoing struggle over AI for the past year, with actors, writers, and artists expressing concerns about potential job losses due to AI advancements.
