Together at MTV's Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Sunday, drawing inspiration from the Otherside metaverse and BAYC NFTs.
The Otherside is a joint venture between Yuga Labs' BAYC and NFT funding and gaming behemoth Animoca Brands.
In collaboration with Otherside creator Yuga Labs, the global rap legends will give Otherside some huge mainstream exposure by transforming the VMAs stage into its style for their latest collaborative hit 'From the D 2 the LBC.' However, details on the performance are limited at this point.
The VMAs have introduced a 'Best Metaverse Performance' category to its annual awards, which appears to be a signal to the music industry that Metaverse performances deserve more attention. Nominees for the award include Justin Bieber, Rift Tour (featuring Ariana Grande), and 21 Pilots.
The VMAs may be hoping that by embracing the Metaverse, they would be able to boost their dwindling audience. After peaking at 12.4 million viewers in 2011, the awards have suffered a continuous reduction in popularity, with only 900,000 joining the live stream to watch the awards on MTV signifying the 8th year in a row that viewership has decreased.
The song is the duo's first collaboration in 20 years, and they are vying for the "Best Hip Hop" category. Both Eminem and Snoop Dogg are collectors of BAYC NFTs, and the song's music video heavily contains NFT material. Additionally, Snoop Dogg recently appeared in an animated Bored Apes video EDM song by Esther Anaya titled BAYC.
On December 31, Eminem paid 123.45 ETH for a hip hop-clothed Bored Ape, and he also owns 28 additional NFTs under the name Shady Holdings. Meanwhile, Snoop Dog is a much more active player in the NFT realm, with a collaboration between him and The Sandbox resulting in 'The Doggies' collection of NFTs and the purchase of a Bored Ape on December 22.
The Otherside and its Voyagers
The Otherside is a gamified, interoperable Metaverse that is currently in beta testing. The platform provides Otherdeed NFTs to represent digital ownership of land plots in the BAYC-affiliated virtual environment, with Otherdeed owners referred to as 'Voyagers.'
According to the litepaper, “Otherside will eventually offer interoperability, allowing Voyagers to bring their own outside collections and NFTs to life within our metaverse.”
As per the source's data, Otherdeed NFT sales have surpassed $1 billion to date, with $23.5 million in volume coming in the last 30 days. The collection's top-tier NFTs are also in great demand, with one plot selling for as much as 333.33 ETH (now valued at $565,289) four months ago.
