The buzz surrounding The ETH Merge has drawn a swarm of scammers who are actively impersonating Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and duping investors using verified Twitter accounts.

Prominent entrepreneurs, including one of the world's richest men, Elon Musk, have repeatedly highlighted Twitter's biggest problem - bots. However, scammers appear to have increased their attempts to remain unnoticed by utilizing verified profiles.

According to sources, there are currently over six verified Twitter accounts that replicate Buterin's profile picture, name, and profile description. The accounts have been actively advertising bogus Ether (ETH) giveaways and duping investors into getting access to their cryptocurrency wallets.

The easiest way to spot fakes is to pay attention to the Twitter handle, also known as the username of the profiles. Recently, fake Twitter identities impersonating Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao have increased, prompting Musk to openly address the issue.

Occasionally, scammers have been caught impersonating the Ethereum Foundation in an attempt to gain public trust. Especially during bull runs and big events such as network upgrades, bad actors find it easier to fool investors who are often unaware of frauds amid hypes.

Equally excited for The Merge, Google introduced a countdown timer depicting the time remaining for the Ethereum blockchain to switch from a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus method to a proof-of-stake (PoS).

As CoinGabbar previously reported on recent Google search statistics, which indicated that searches for the term "Ethereum Merge" earned a score of 50 or above several times in the last 30 days.
