subscription service for users to get verified, after Elon Musk's disclosure of the Twitter Blue programme.
The launch of a paid verification service that will bestow a blue badge on profiles was recently announced by Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The cost of the membership on the web starts at $11.99 per month, while it costs $14.99 per month for iOS platforms.
The CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, revealed in an Instagram update that users with "Meta Verified" accounts will receive a verified badge, greater platform visibility, and prioritised customer care, among other advantages. Users in New Zealand and Australia will be able to access the service starting this week, and it is anticipated that it will expand to new countries "soon."
The profiles of users who have made payments can be verified by presenting a government-issued ID. Together with profile authentication, the subscription package for Facebook and Instagram provides extra security against impersonation. Since Twitter, a different social networking business, started charging extra for its Twitter Blue subscription, which grants users a blue tick in exchange for a $8 fee, this has happened.
Those who register for the programme will also get special stickers to use in Stories and Reels. Also, users will receive 100 free stars each month, which is the virtual currency used to tip Facebook content producers. According to Meta, users won't be prevented from changing their username, profile name, date of birth, or image without reapplying for a Meta Verified subscription and going through the procedure again. Companies are also not currently able to submit an application for a Meta Verified badge.
It is challenging to ignore the parallels between Twitter Blue, which Elon Musk only recently introduced a few months ago, and Meta's new paid blue tick verification. The Meta team looks to be closely monitoring its competitor to see how it develops under the leadership of the Tesla CEO, which is an obvious copy of approach that Meta has supposedly been accused of in the past.
