OpenAI’s owned ChatGPT gained significant popularity in the past few months. ChatGPT is a large language model chatbot built on GPT-3.5 which was trained on Azure. Earlier in 2019, Microsoft invested $1 billion in the AI research firm OpenAI, which was formed by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and a group of others. Now, OpenAI is reportedly in talks to raise fresh capital at a valuation of around $30 billion.
As per reports, Microsoft is willing to pay up to $10 billion for the acquisition. The report added that the funding terms include Microsoft receiving 75% of OpenAI's profits until it recoups its initial investment once OpenAI figures out how to make money on ChatGPT. On hitting that threshold, Microsoft will own 49% of OpenAI, with other investors owning 49% and OpenAI's non-profit parent owning 2%.
Through the acquisition, the company aims to incorporate OpenAI's artificial intelligence into Word, Outlook, Powerpoint, and other products. This will allow users to flesh out a document with stretches of automatically-generated text based on a prompt.
Furthermore, this might include an AI-generated email that is created for the user depending on what they wish to say to the recipient. Microsoft engineers and researchers have been utilizing OpenAI's machine-learning models for more than a year to create customized AI tools for drafting emails and documents.
In addition, the acquisition might benefit Microsoft's Bing browser, its struggling Google competitor. As per reports, the company also planning to integrate ChatGPT into Bing.
