Russia has sentenced Marat Tambiyev, a former chief investigator, to 16 years in prison for accepting a bribe of 1,032 bitcoins, valued at $65 million, from a group of hackers. This scandal has shocked the nation, highlighting the growing intersection of cybercrime and corruption.
Last year, Tambiyev was implicated in accepting Bitcoin bribes from the Infraud Organization, a notorious hacking group under investigation by the Investigative Committee of Russia. Tambiyev agreed not to confiscate the group’s illegally obtained bitcoins, receiving half of the illicit assets as part of the deal. On April 7, 2022, he received the bribe.
In 2023, Russian authorities uncovered these Bitcoins on a Mac computer in a file labeled 'Pension.' This discovery raised suspicions as the sum was significantly disproportionate to Tambiyev's earnings, which could have only amounted to 11.7 million rubles ($144,000) over his career.
The investigation further revealed that Tambiyev denied the charges, claiming he was framed. Despite his defense, the court sentenced him to 16 years in prison. He plans to appeal the verdict, along with his colleague Kristina Lyakhovenko, who received a nine-year sentence for her involvement in the same case.
The case also involved Andrey Sergeevich Novak, the alleged leader of the Infraud Organization, who was arrested in January 2022. The hacker group, active from October 2010 to February 2018, was responsible for stealing over $560 million through various cybercrimes, including carding and theft of personal banking information.
The sentencing of Marat Tambiyev underscores the ongoing battle against cybercrime and corruption within law enforcement. As the digital landscape evolves, the importance of maintaining integrity among investigators remains paramount to effectively combat cybercriminals.
By shedding light on this high-profile case, Russia aims to demonstrate its commitment to rooting out corruption and ensuring that those who abuse their power face justice.
