Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has made two generous contributions to aid the victims of the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria last week. The earthquake has caused immense destruction, with the death toll now reaching an estimated 33,000, making it one of the worst disasters in recent decades.

Buterin has been actively donating Ethereum to support relief efforts in Turkey, and his latest donation of 50 ETH, which is approximately $77,000, was sent to Anka Relief on Feb. 12, according to blockchain security firm PeckShield. Anka Relief expressed their gratitude for Buterin's donation and noted that crypto donations have been pouring in since the first day of the disaster.

They commented, “Since day 1 of the disaster, we witnessed donations piling in the wallets of a handful of major NGOs. It's great that they have attracted and will continue to attract more funds.”

Anka recently provided a comprehensive list of cryptocurrency wallets that can be used to make donations. The Web3 Relief Support Organization has also spearheaded the Ukraine DAO project, which is aimed at raising crypto donations to support relief efforts in the besieged country.

The latest donation adds to the 99 ETH that Vitalik sent in support of earthquake victims. On February 11th, Vitalik.eth address sent around $150,000 worth of ETH to Ahbap, a non-governmental and nonprofit organization dedicated to providing relief to those affected by the disaster in Turkey.

Ahbap has also provided several crypto addresses for various tokens that can be accepted as donations. To date, the organization claims to have received over $4.3 million in crypto donations, with stablecoins being the most popular tokens sent. According to Etherscan, the Ahbap wallet currently contains 409 ETH, which is worth approximately $622,000 at the time of writing.

The Financial Times recently reported that crypto donations have been pouring in from all corners of the globe. In total, more than $10 million in crypto has been sent by companies, with Binance alone donating $5 million in support of Turkish relief efforts. Last week, Binance also made a $100 BNB airdrop announcement to individuals in the most severely affected locations.

On February 7th, just one day after the devastating earthquake, reports stated how the Web3 community was coming together to arrange cryptocurrency donations for NGOs and provide support.

This is not the first time that cryptocurrencies have been utilized to help earthquake victims. In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Nepal in 2015, donations made using bitcoin were forwarded to relief agencies. This highlights the capability of cryptocurrencies to help individuals in need.
