Balancer is an automated market maker (AMM) that was built on the Ethereum blockchain and went live in March 2020. Placeholder and Accomplice helped it get a $3 million seed round. Balancer protocol works as a price sensor, a liquidity provider, and a self-balancing weighted portfolio. It lets users make money by contributing to liquidity pools that they can customise with its recently released token, $BAL.
Several kinds of pools are run by the protocol:
Private pools are run by the person who owns them, and that person is the only one who puts money into the pool. Also, the owner can change any of the parameters.
People who want to become liquidity providers use shared pools (LPs). Balancer Pool Tokens are given to the LPs as a reward (BPTs).
Smart pools are like private pools, but a smart contract controls how they are used. They also give out BPTs as rewards and let anyone add money to the pool.
Balancer Lab was started by Fernando Martinelli and Mike McDonald, but it began as a research programme at a software company called "BlockScience" in 2018. The Balancer project is made up of smart, like-minded people who know a lot about the DeFi space.
