Band Protocol is a cross-chain data oracle platform that can take data from the real world and send it to on-chain applications. It can also connect APIs to smart contracts to make it easier for information to be shared between on-chain and off-chain data sources.

By adding trustworthy, verifiable real-world data to blockchains, Band Protocol opens up a wide range of new use cases for developers to explore. They can now use any kind of real-world data in their decentralised application (DApp) logic, such as sports, weather, random numbers, price feed data, and more.

Band Protocol started out as an ERC-20 project on the Ethereum blockchain in September 2019, but when Band Protocol 2.0 came out in June 2020, it moved to the Cosmos network. The new protocol is built on BandChain by using the Cosmos SDK. Oracle nodes on BandChain not only relay data, but they also help make and validate blocks, giving them a dual purpose.

BAND is the native token of the Band Protocol ecosystem. It is used as collateral by validators who fulfil data requests, and it is also the main form of currency on BandChain, used to pay for private data.
