Firo (FIRO), which used to be called Zcoin, is a digital currency that aims to be private. It made the Lelantus privacy protocol, which lets people burn their coins and then trade them in for brand-new coins that don't have any record of past transactions. Before Lelantus, it was also the first cryptocurrency to code and launch a working version of the Zerocoin protocol, which became one of the most popular privacy protocols. After cryptographic flaws were found in the Zerocoin protocol in 2019, Sigma and then Lelantus replaced it. Firo's Lelantus privacy protocol and its predecessor, Sigma, use a special kind of zero-knowledge proof called one-out-of-many proofs. Unlike other zk constructions, one-out-of-many proofs don't need a trusted setup or strange mathematical or cryptographic assumptions while keeping high anonymity sets. It was also the first project to use Dandelion++, a way to spread transactions that stops third parties from linking an IP address to a transaction. This was done in October 2018. In November 2018, the Thai Democrat Party's primary election used Firo's (then Zcoin's) blockchain to choose its party leader. With more than 127,000 votes cast all over the country, this is the first large-scale election in the world to be held on a blockchain.
