What is Arweave (AR)

Arweave is a decentralized data storage protocol designed to make information storage permanent, scalable, and cost-effective. Unlike cloud storage services (Amazon S3, Google Cloud) that charge recurring monthly fees and can delete or censor data, Arweave allows users to pay once and have their data stored permanently on a decentralized network,  theoretically forever.

THE BLOCKWEAVE: ARWEAVE'S CORE TECHNOLOGY

Arweave replaces the traditional linear blockchain with a "blockweave" a data structure where each new block is linked not just to the previous block but also to a randomly selected older block (called the "recall block"). Miners must prove they have stored the recall block to add a new block, creating a system where data retention is directly tied to the economic incentive of mining rewards.

THE PERMAWEBA

rweave serves as the foundation for the "Permaweb" a permanent, decentralized version of the internet where websites, applications, and data persist indefinitely without relying on any central server. Applications deployed on the Permaweb cannot be taken down, modified without user consent, or censored by corporations or governments. This property makes Arweave valuable for NFT metadata storage, historical archives, journalistic records, and censorship-resistant publishing.

THE AR TOKEN AND ECONOMICS

AR is Arweave's native cryptocurrency, used to pay for data storage. Users pay a one-time fee calculated to cover storage costs in perpetuity, based on the protocol's endowment model. Miners earn AR tokens for storing data, with rewards coming from both new block production and the storage endowment.

REAL-WORLD USE CASESNFT

projects use Arweave to store media files permanently (unlike IPFS, where files disappear if not pinned). Mirror.xyz, a Web3 publishing platform, stores articles on Arweave. Government archives and journalism projects use it for censorship-resistant record-keeping.
