What is Fear and Greed Index

The Crypto Fear and Greed Index is a sentiment measurement tool that quantifies the overall emotional state of the cryptocurrency market on a scale from 0 to 100  where 0 represents Extreme Fear (maximum investor panic) and 100 represents Extreme Greed (maximum investor euphoria). Created by Alternative.me and updated daily, it is one of the most widely referenced sentiment indicators in crypto investing.

HOW THE INDEX IS CALCULATED

The Fear and Greed Index is a composite of six data sources, each weighted by contribution:

  • Volatility (25%): Current Bitcoin volatility and maximum drawdowns compared to 30/90 day averages. Unusual volatility spikes indicate fearful markets.

  • Market Momentum and Volume (25%): Current Bitcoin trading volume and market momentum versus 30/90 day averages. High buying volume in bullish conditions signals greed.

  • Social Media (15%): Measures the speed of social media interaction on crypto hashtags  high engagement rates signal greed, low rates signal fear.

  • Surveys (15%): Weekly crypto sentiment surveys (currently paused).

  • Bitcoin Dominance (10%): Rising BTC dominance suggests fear (investors retreat to Bitcoin as crypto's safe haven). Falling dominance suggests greed (capital flowing into riskier altcoins).

  • Google Trends (10%): Searches for Bitcoin-related queries  "Bitcoin price manipulation" trending indicates fear; "Bitcoin price forecast" indicates greed.

HOW TRADERS USE THE INDEX

  • Contrarian Investing: Warren Buffett's famous principle  "be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful"  applies powerfully to crypto.

  • Historical data shows: Extreme Fear readings (0-25) have often coincided with excellent long-term buying opportunities in Bitcoin. Extreme Greed readings (75-100) have often preceded significant corrections.

LIMITATIONS

The index measures sentiment, not fundamental value. Markets can remain in extreme fear or greed for extended periods. It works best as one signal among many rather than a standalone entry or exit trigger.
