In a recent X post, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has voiced concerns over the growing trend of "AI governance," warning that naive approaches to managing systems could have unintended consequences. Buterin argues that relying solely on Artificial Intelligence for decision-making—particularly in allocating funds or resources—opens the door for exploitation, manipulation, and inefficient outcomes.

In a tweet, Buterin highlighted a key issue: using an AI to directly allocate funding for contributions can be risky. He explains that if people know an AI is in charge of distributing resources, malicious actors may attempt to game the system. 

“People WILL put a jailbreak plus ‘gimme all the money’ in as many places as they can,” he wrote. This, according to Ethereum Founder Vitalik Buterin, demonstrates that fully trusting could backfire, creating loopholes that incentivize exploitation.

Buterin's critique is based on the principle that, regardless of how advanced it is, it cannot be immune to manipulation. While AI can process information at incredible speed, it lacks the contextual judgment that we humans possess by nature. As a result, systems that rely on Artificial Intelligence alone for governance or decision-making may fail to account for clever or malicious strategies deployed by participants.

Vitalik Supports Alternative Approach: Info-Finance. Why?

Rather than advocating for hardcoded AI governance,  Buterin suggests an alternative: the info-finance approach. According to his blog post, this model promotes an open market where anyone can contribute their AI models. 

These models are then subject to a spot-check mechanism, which can be triggered by any participant and evaluated by a human jury. This approach encourages diversity of models in real time and fosters accountability. Such a design of the institution will be in the interest of model contributors and external speculators to watch outputs to identify mistakes or malicious intent. 

This type of institution design, where you create an open opportunity to people with LLMs on the outside to plug in, will be inherently more resistant, Buterin wrote. With human supervision and decentralized Artificial Intelligence contributions, the system will minimize vulnerabilities and avoid single points of failure.

Real-World Risks Highlighted by AI Exploits

The dangers and misuse of tools have recently been underscored by security researchers. Cybersecurity expert Eito Miyamura showed how ChatGPT could be fooled into leaking private email data with Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools.

Through a latest tweet, Miyamura claimed that attackers could gain control of ChatGPT by sending a calendar invite with a jailbroken prompt and prompting the victim to have the Artificial intelligence draw up his/her schedule. This provided the capability to scan the personal emails of the victim and forward confidential data to the attacker. 

Although OpenAI does not provide access to MCP with the help of manual approvals, the example demonstrates the susceptibility of systems to social engineering and abuse.

Such cases contribute to the argument by Buterin that unchecked AI governance, lack of human checks, and model diversity may lead to disastrous security and operational failures.

The criticism by Vitalik Buterin is a nice reminder that Artificial intelligence systems, however intelligent they are, are not omnipotent.
