What is Cryptocurrency Pairs

Cryptocurrency trading pairs are the combinations in which two cryptocurrencies (or a cryptocurrency and a fiat currency) are traded against each other on an exchange. When you see BTC/USDT, ETH/BTC, or SOL/INR on an exchange, you are looking at trading pairs. Understanding how they work is fundamental to navigating any crypto exchange.

THE STRUCTURE OF A TRADING PAIR

  • Every trading pair consists of two components: the Base Currency (the first ticker listed  the asset you are buying or selling) and the Quote Currency (the second ticker  the currency you use to price and pay for the base).

  • In the pair BTC/USDT: BTC is the base currency (what you are buying or selling) and USDT is the quote currency (the price is expressed in USDT). A price of 92,000 means 1 BTC costs 92,000 USDT.

TYPES OF TRADING PAIRS

  • Crypto-to-Fiat Pairs: Cryptocurrency priced in government-issued currency. BTC/USD, ETH/INR, SOL/EUR. These are typically the easiest entry point for new users converting local currency to crypto.

  • Crypto-to-Stablecoin Pairs: The most liquid pairs on most exchanges. BTC/USDT, ETH/USDC. Stablecoins serve as a stable base currency that avoids fiat banking complications while maintaining dollar-equivalent pricing.

  • Crypto-to-Crypto Pairs: One cryptocurrency priced in another. ETH/BTC is the most famous  showing how many Bitcoin one Ether is worth. These pairs are useful for relative value analysis between assets.

WHY PAIRS MATTER FOR TRADERS

Liquidity varies significantly between pairs  BTC/USDT has enormous liquidity with tight spreads, while obscure altcoin pairs may have wide spreads and high slippage. Trading fees also differ by pair tier on some exchanges. Arbitrage opportunities between pairs on the same exchange are captured through triangular arbitrage strategies.

PAIR SELECTION ON INDIAN EXCHANGES

On CoinDCX and WazirX, INR pairs are available for major cryptocurrencies. USDT pairs offer access to a broader range of altcoins. Most Indian traders use USDT pairs for altcoin trading and INR pairs for fiat on/off ramp transactions.
