What is Mainnet

Mainnet (main network) is the live, production version of a blockchain where real transactions involving real cryptocurrency of genuine monetary value are processed and permanently recorded. It is the opposite of a testnet (test network) the public, permanent, and economically live instance of a blockchain protocol.

MAINNET VS. TESTNET: THE KEY DISTINCTION

Testnet: A blockchain network running the same software as mainnet but with test tokens (no real value) used by developers to test smart contracts, applications, and protocol changes without risking real money. Testnets can be reset, altered, and experimented with freely. Ethereum's current testnets include Sepolia and Holesky.
Mainnet: The live network where real ETH, BTC, SOL, and other cryptocurrencies have monetary value. Transactions on mainnet are permanent and irreversible. Every action has real financial consequences.

Blockchain
