A masternode is a type of full node in certain blockchain networks that performs enhanced network functions beyond basic transaction validation including enabling advanced features like instant transactions, privacy mixing, and decentralised governance in exchange for regular cryptocurrency rewards. Running a masternode requires locking a significant amount of the network's cryptocurrency as collateral.
HOW MASTERNODES WORK
Unlike regular full nodes (which validate transactions and relay blocks without compensation),
masternodes: are always-online servers with dedicated IP addresses and collateral locked in a verifiable wallet, provide enhanced services to the network beyond basic validation, receive a portion of each block reward as payment for services, and participate in governance voting to guide network development.
MASTERNODE COLLATERAL AND COSTS
Dash pioneered the masternode concept with a 1,000 DASH collateral requirement the locked collateral proves commitment and creates economic skin-in-the-game. The collateral remains in the operator's control (not sent anywhere) but must stay locked in the designated wallet address to maintain masternode status. Unlock it and masternode status is immediately lost. Beyond collateral, running a masternode requires a dedicated server (VPS or physical), reliable bandwidth, and technical administration.
MASTERNODE REWARDS
Dash splits block rewards: 45% to miners, 45% to masternodes, 10% to the treasury DAO. With approximately 4,600 active Dash masternodes sharing 45% of all block rewards, each masternode earns roughly 6-8% annual return on collateral in DASH terms. The USD value of returns fluctuates with DASH price.
OTHER MASTERNODE NETWORKS
Zcoin/Firo: Znodes requiring 1,000 FIRO collateral. PIVX: Masternodes with 10,000 PIVX.
Horizen (ZEN): Requires 42 ZEN. Many smaller projects use masternode models, though quality and legitimacy vary enormously.
MASTERNODE INVESTMENT CONSIDERATIONS
Masternodes are illiquid investments capital is locked for the duration. Returns are in the native token, subject to price volatility. Due diligence on the underlying blockchain's fundamentals is essential before committing masternode collateral.
