MetaFi is a portmanteau of Metaverse and DeFi (Decentralised Finance), a concept describing the convergence of virtual world economies with decentralised financial infrastructure. MetaFi envisions a future where metaverse assets (virtual land, in-game items, digital wearables) and DeFi primitives (lending, trading, liquidity provision) are seamlessly integrated, creating liquid, composable virtual economies governed by their communities.
THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF METAFINFTs
as Financial Assets: In MetaFi, NFTs are not just collectibles, they are financial instruments.
Virtual land in Decentraland or The Sandbox can be: collateralised to borrow stablecoins, rented to other users for recurring yield, fractionalised into fungible tokens and traded on DEXs, used as collateral for DeFi lending protocols.
DeFi Integrated into Games: Players earn tokens with real value, stake in-game assets, provide liquidity in in-game DEXs, and participate in DAO governance all within the virtual world context.
Cross-Metaverse Interoperability: MetaFi envisions assets that are not locked to one platform, an avatar outfit purchased in one game usable in another, virtual land from different worlds tradeable on shared marketplaces.
METAFI COMPONENTS IN PRACTICE
Play-to-Earn economies (Axie Infinity pioneered this model): Yield Guild Games: A DAO that purchases in-game NFT assets and rents them to players globally, sharing earnings, the first "metaverse lender."
NFT lending protocols: BendDAO, NFTfi, and Arcade enable NFT holders to borrow ETH against their digital assets.
Virtual real estate REITs: Fractional ownership of virtual land parcels through tokenised real estate investment structures.
DAO-governed metaverses: Decentraland and The Sandbox are governed by token holders, with true community ownership of virtual worlds.
METAFI AND THE FUTURE OF WORK
MetaFi proponents argue that virtual economies will grow into meaningful components of the global economy, particularly in developing countries where digital labour (playing games, creating virtual content, providing virtual services) offers income opportunities otherwise inaccessible.
