What is MetaMask

MetaMask is the world's most widely used Web3 wallet a browser extension and mobile application that allows users to interact with Ethereum and EVM-compatible blockchain networks, manage cryptocurrency, and connect to decentralised applications (dApps). Developed by ConsenSys and launched in 2016, MetaMask has become the standard interface between users and the Ethereum ecosystem, with over 30 million monthly active users as of 2024.

HOW METAMASK WORKS

MetaMask stores your private keys encrypted in your browser's local storage, protected by a password. When you visit a Web3 application (Uniswap, OpenSea, Aave), the dApp detects MetaMask's injected web3 provider, and requests connection. You approve the connection, and the dApp can now read your wallet address, request transaction signatures, and interact with smart contracts on your behalf but MetaMask never gives dApps access to your private key.

SETTING UP METAMASK

Install from metamask.io (browser extension for Chrome/Firefox/Brave, or mobile app). Create a new wallet MetaMask generates a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase. Write this down on paper immediately. Store it in a secure offline location. Never photograph, email, or save it digitally. Set a strong password for local wallet encryption. Your wallet is now ready.

ADDING CUSTOM NETWORKS

By default, MetaMask connects only to Ethereum Mainnet. To use other EVM chains (BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Avalanche), add them via Settings > Networks or use chainlist.org which provides one-click network additions with verified RPC endpoints.

SECURITY ESSENTIALS

Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase with anyone MetaMask will never ask for it. Regularly audit and revoke token approvals via revoke.cash. Use separate MetaMask profiles for different activities. Consider connecting a Ledger or Trezor hardware wallet to MetaMask for cold storage with dApp accessibility. Beware of phishing sites mimicking MetaMask always verify you are on metamask.io.

Blockchain
