Schedule VDA (Virtual Digital Asset) is a dedicated section in India's Income Tax Return forms introduced for AY 2023-24 (Financial Year 2022-23) β specifically designed for taxpayers to report income from cryptocurrency and other virtual digital assets. Before this, there was no dedicated reporting section, leading to significant compliance gaps.
WHICH ITR FORM TO USE FOR CRYPTO
ITR-1 (Sahaj): Cannot be used if you have VDA income. ITR-2: For individuals/HUF with income from salary, house property, capital gains, and VDA, but NOT business income. Use ITR-2 if your crypto trading is investment activity (not frequent trading that constitutes a business). ITR-3: For individuals/HUF with business/professional income. Use if you are a frequent crypto trader whose activity constitutes a business, or if you mine crypto professionally.
WHAT SCHEDULE VDA REQUIRES
For each VDA transaction (buy/sell/swap/gift), you must report: Type of VDA: Bitcoin, Ethereum, NFT, etc. Date of acquisition. Cost of acquisition (purchase price in INR). Date of transfer (sale/swap). Sale consideration (sale price in INR). Cost of improvement (if applicable β usually NIL). Income (net gain = sale consideration minus cost of acquisition). The VDA schedule automatically applies the 30% flat tax rate to the net gain.
STEP-BY-STEP FILING PROCESS
Gather all transaction records from all exchanges used. Convert all values to INR at the applicable exchange rate on each transaction date. Identify each taxable event: every sale, swap, or disposal is a separate entry. Calculate gain/loss per transaction. Note: Losses cannot offset gains β even zero-sum. File Schedule VDA with each profitable transaction listed. Claim credit for 1% TDS deducted (Form 26AS should reflect this from Indian exchanges). Use a dedicated crypto tax platform for automation: KoinX (India-focused), Cleartax (VDA module), Taxnodes β these integrate with Indian exchange APIs to auto-populate Schedule VDA.
A blockchain is a subset of a distributed database. The Bitcoin inventors originally prototyped the system in 2008. This modern database is made up of separate blocks that are connected together in a chronological chain. Blockchains may be used to store a wide range of data types. It has mostly been utilized as a public ledger for bitcoin transactions to date. A peer-to-peer network comprised of independent nodes uses a consensus process to ensure the blockchain's security and legitimacy. Each node in the network keeps a public and immutable copy of the data.
2 Factor Authentication is a security measure with two layers. It is used by the majority of cryptocurrency exchanges. To log in, you must provide not only a password, but also a code obtained, for example, from the Google authenticator.
An airdrop is a method of distributing coins. End users can typically obtain coins for free or in exchange for doing a small task, such as subscribing to a newsletter, sending a tweet, or inviting others via a personal affiliate link. Cryptocurrency airdrops β the act of depositing cryptocurrency into public crypto wallets β are utilized as a marketing, liquidity creation, and network bootstrapping technique for many different types of blockchain initiatives.
Altcoin - "alternative coin" - is any kind of digital currency other than Bitcoin. Since the launch of Bitcoin, the world's first digital currency, many altcoins (as well as supporting blockchains) have been created. Altcoin digital currencies share many similarities to Bitcoin, but consistently and have significant differences. There are about 20,000 altcoins, and this number is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Altcoins often develop Bitcoin features. Ethereum, currently the most widely used blockchain, supports digital contracts and separate applications where Bitcoin does not. Altcoins are also often created to cater to the needs of different users. The Litecoin blockchain, for example, can process payments quarterly for the duration of Bitcoin.
Cold storage is the way to store cryptocurrency offline.Β The word refers to the use of offline wallets that are not connected to the internet. Cold storage is the most secure way to keep cryptocurrencies since an offline currency becomes less likely to be hacked and stolen. Paper wallets, printed renditions of private keys, and offline hardware and software wallets are all examples of cold storage.
