Women and young people in Mukura will soon be leading Uganda Bamboo planting on 10 acres of degraded land, part of a new project that links land restoration with blockchain-backed transparency. Timeless Bamboo and Fedrok AG have completed baseline surveys and secured the land, with planting set to begin in late 2025.
The pilot aims to demonstrate a nature-based climate solution that tackles local economic and environmental challenges. It focuses on restoring degraded land using bamboo, a fast-growing grass that captures carbon, improves soil health, and provides income opportunities through construction and bioenergy. Community members, especially youth and women, are responsible for mobilization and fieldwork to guarantee long-term local involvement.
“By planting Uganda Bamboo, communities are restoring land and creating income, food security, and climate action,” said Emmanuel Hedwig Engoru, executive director of Timeless Bamboo. He added that youth and women leadership “reflects a deep-rooted belief that the future must be inclusive, regenerative, and locally driven.”
To build trust with traceable data, the project will use Fedrok’s blockchain platform to log every stage, from community consultations and planting events to future carbon metrics. Once the bamboo matures, carbon data will be verified by satellite and on-ground checks, reducing the need for costly third-party monitoring. “All project milestones will be recorded on our blockchain, guaranteeing each step is verifiable,” noted James Mulbah, regional manager at Fedrok AG.
With land secured and surveys completed, the partners’ next steps include formalizing their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding detailing roles, activities, and budget commitments. They will also finalize land tenure agreements with the local families who own the designated plots.
Based in Kampala, Timeless Bamboo Co. Limited is a regenerative enterprise that develops bamboo-based products for energy, construction, and agriculture. The company integrates agroforestry and eco-innovation to restore land, reduce deforestation, and create green jobs.
Fedrok AG is a Swiss company that provides decentralized blockchain infrastructure for environmental governance and data verification. Its platform turns environmental and social actions into verifiable digital assets. The company supports other impact-focused pilots in Africa, including child labor prevention in Ghana’s cocoa and palm oil supply chains, community recycling tokenization in Madagascar, and micro-payment platforms in Chad and Niger.
The Mukura pilot adds to both organizations’ efforts to scale climate solutions in the Global South. While no carbon credit details were shared, project outcomes will be digitally tracked and accessible to stakeholders and future buyers.
