ETHPORTO 2024

- Portugal

What Was ETHPorto 2024?

ETHPorto 2024 was an Ethereum event held in Porto, Portugal, from 16 to 18 May 2024. It ran a hackathon, a conference, and hands-on workshops at the same time, all built to bring the Web3 community together. The official page sat on the ETHPorto site. Porto, Portugal's second city and a rising tech destination, gave the event an energetic, builder-friendly base.

This was a build-and-learn event more than a trade show. Teams could hack, attend talks, and join workshops across the same three days. To follow similar gatherings, see CoinGabbar's crypto hackathons list and the crypto events calendar.

Key Themes and Hackathon Highlights

The agenda matched a developer-first, European crowd:

  • Ethereum tooling and Layer 2s for faster, cheaper apps.
  • DeFi and on-chain finance under EU MiCA rules.
  • NFTs and digital ownership, a focus you can follow on our NFT events hub.
  • Hands-on workshops to onboard new builders.

The mix of hacking, talks, and workshops gave newcomers and pros something to do at every level. Many also explored wider Web3 tech events through CoinGabbar.

How Crypto Is Growing in Portugal

Portugal was once seen as a pure crypto tax haven, and its story has matured. Since 2023, short-term gains on crypto held under 365 days are taxed at a flat 28%, while gains on assets held longer than a year stay tax-free, and there is no wealth tax on crypto. Crypto-to-crypto swaps are not taxed at the moment of the swap. Staking and lending income is taxed at 28%. This blend keeps Portugal one of the most crypto-friendly countries in Western Europe.

The rules are also catching up to the EU. In December 2025, parliament passed laws (No. 69/2025 and 70/2025) to bring MiCA into national law, with key provisions taking effect in July 2026, splitting oversight between the Banco de Portugal and the securities regulator CMVM. Portugal punches above its weight on adoption: adjusted for population, it ranks around 20th globally, helped by a large digital-nomad community drawn by friendly visas. Local firms are pushing forward too, with Bison Bank working on real-world-asset tokenization and a Portuguese stablecoin, and clubs like SL Benfica accepting crypto payments. Impact of the Event on Portugal's Ethereum Scene

An Ethereum hackathon in Porto helps Portugal in real ways. It brings global builders into a rising tech city. It pulls local students and developers into Web3 through hands-on workshops. And it shows that serious Ethereum work happens outside the usual hubs, in a country with friendly rules and a strong digital-nomad scene. Each edition feeds the local builder pipeline.

Why Sponsors, Exhibitors and Projects Should Join

A builder event in a crypto-friendly EU country draws a focused, international crowd. Strong fits include:

  • Ethereum Layer 2s and infrastructure: win European developers early.
  • DeFi and MiCA-ready projects: connect with EU-focused builders.
  • NFT and digital-asset platforms: reach Portugal's creative community.
  • Wallet and tooling firms: onboard new builders at the workshops.
  • Funds and angel investors: back hackathon teams early.
