SpaceX Stock Falls 2.6% as 319M-Share Lockup Unlock

SpaceX stock slipped again on Wednesday. Shares of Space Exploration Technologies Corp. closed at $139.65, down 2.57% on the day.

SPCX stock has been volatile lately, and the drop came right before a big SPCX lockup expiration set for August 20.

This is the second major unlock since SpaceX went public. And traders are watching it closely.

Let’s discuss the SPCX price prediction: where does SpaceX stock go next?

What happened to SpaceX stock today?

The latest SpaceX share price move follows a familiar pattern around unlock events. SPCX opened at $144.96 and closed at $139.65, a fall of $3.69 for the session. The stock touched a low of $136.72 and a high of $145.01 during the day.

Trading volume came in at 72.5 million shares. That is well below the average volume of about 120.2 million shares, based on the chart data shared with this report.

The 52-week range sits between $104.83 and $225.64. The $SPCX market cap was near $1.841 trillion intraday at the last check.

Why Is SpaceX Stock Falling?

$SPCX stock is falling mainly because of a 319 million-share lockup unlock set for August 20, which adds a large batch of new shares to the market.

Around 319 million shares held by employees and early investors become eligible for sale on August 20. Market watchers call this the second tranche of the post-IPO lockup schedule, part of the wider SpaceX lockup timeline tied to the company's IPO. Some reports put the unlock size at close to 7% of total shares outstanding.

The first tranche was released on August 6. That event alone doubled the $SPCX public float overnight, based on figures cited in market commentary.

SPCX hit a fresh post-IPO low around that time, before staging a sharp bounce. This SpaceX share unlock also set the stage for the volatility seen this week.

Lockup expirations work in a simple way. More shares become free to trade, supply goes up, and that can push prices down if buyers don't keep pace.

How has SPCX performed since the first unlock?

The reaction to the August 6 unlock caught some traders off guard. Instead of falling apart, SPCX rose 6.1% that day, then jumped another 15.8% the next session, according to trading commentary shared online.

SPCX also managed to reclaim its $135 SpaceX IPO price on August 10. That was the first close above the offering price since mid-July.

Some traders see a pattern here that resembles other big tech listings. One comparison making the rounds is Facebook's early trading history, where a quick recovery ran into heavy overhead supply.

LinkedIn's 2011 debut is another example some point to, where a strong bounce eventually stalled once more shares hit the market.

$SPCX stock technical outlook

Based on the 1-hour chart, SPCX is consolidating in the $139 to $143 zone. This follows a sharp rebound off the roughly $104.83 low.

The area between $149 and $151 looks like the key resistance zone for now. A clean hourly close above $151 could open the door toward the $160 to $165 area, though nothing here is guaranteed.

On the downside, a break below the $136.75 to $133.36 zone would weaken the setup. That could bring the $125 to $120 region back into focus.

Overall, the chart reads as neutral to mildly bullish as long as SPCX holds above $136. Options activity is also worth watching.

Roughly $8.5 million in put option flow reportedly hit the tape recently, a sign some traders are betting the recent bounce may be running out of steam.

Other news around SPCX

A few other headlines are stirring up SpaceX news this week.

China's LandSpace reportedly completed a rocket booster landing, matching a feat that had long been unique to SPCX. Some commentary linked this news to added pressure on the stock, alongside the unlock.

Separately, AI coding startup Cognition AI denied reports that it was in acquisition talks with the team, after some social media chatter suggested Elon Musk's company had shown interest.

None of these headlines are confirmed through official filings, so readers should treat them as developing stories rather than settled facts.

SpaceX stock price prediction: what to watch next

More lockup expirations are scheduled for the coming months, and that supply overhang could continue to cap rallies in SPCX for a while. Any near-term SpaceX stock forecast will likely hinge on how cleanly the market absorbs this latest batch of shares.

Traders who follow the stock closely will likely keep an eye on the $150 to $151 zone as the line in the sand. A move above it, backed by strong volume, would be a more convincing bullish signal than the recent choppy trade.

A drop back under $133 to $136 would suggest sellers are back in control, at least in the short term.

As always, thin volume around unlock events can exaggerate moves in either direction, so wider price swings should not come as a surprise.
