New Program Unlocks BTC Rewards for Institutional Clients

Latest crypto news: BitGo Bank & Trust, N.A., announced BitGo Bitcoin staking with Stacks on November 3, 2026.

Official BitGo Blog Post

According to the official BitGo blog post, eligible institutions can earn rewards on the coins they hold. The staked coins never leave the Bitcoin network and stay in qualified custody.

Stacks Labs put out its own announcement the same day. It runs the program, which is limited to whitelisted institutional partners for now.

The custodian (NYSE: BTGO) is the first public federally chartered digital asset bank. It has partnered with the project since 2021, from custody to sBTC signer support.

Why Institutions Wanted a Native BTC Yield Option

Large holders have long faced a tradeoff. Most yield routes meant wrapping or bridging coins, moving custody to a third party, or lending them out. Others paid rewards in a different token.

Those steps raised compliance, accounting, and risk issues, especially for ETFs and ETPs bound by qualified custody rules.

How Proof of Transfer Staking Works in Five Simple Steps

BitGo Bitcoin staking relies on Stacks Proof of Transfer, called PoX-5 in this setup. Stacks miners spend real BTC to produce blocks. That BTC has gone out as rewards: 4,224 BTC since 2021, per the official overview page.

The new model sends a priority share of those miner payments to stakers.

  1. Lock coins in a time-locked vault that uses standard Bitcoin script. Custody stays with the bank, and nothing is lent, bridged, or wrapped.

  2. Add STX worth about 5% of the staked value.

  3. Register the pair on Stacks for a bond of about six months.

  4. Earn BTC rewards, which the custodian claims for the client. Payouts can go to a separate address from the principal.

  5. Receive the principal at maturity. The protocol has no slashing.

Earlier bonds, including the Genesis Bond in September 2026 and a follow-up in October, sold out, according to Stacks.

Key Risks and What Comes Next for Institutional Yield

Both companies list risks. The STX position carries its own price risk, and its value can swing with the crypto market.

Other risks apply too, from smart contract bugs to protocol and network issues. Access to the coins is restricted until the bond ends, so liquidity is limited.

Overall, BitGo Bitcoin staking is an early step toward native yield on held coins inside regulated custody. Access is limited, and terms can change.
