San Francisco Crypto Theft: Investor Linked to Sam Altman Robbed

$11M Crypto Heist Hits Investor Linked to Sam Altman

San Francisco Crypto Theft News Highlights Rising Crypto Crime Risks

Why did San Francisco become the center of one of the most shocking crypto crimes of the year? That question is now at the center of a growing investigation after an $11 million digital asset heist linked to Sam Altman’s former boyfriend sent shockwaves through the tech world.

The San Francisco crypto theft is now a major topic in crypto theft news and mainstream media, raising new concerns about investor safety.

A Shock Attack That Raises New Fears for Investors

As per the reports, victim of San Francisco crypto theft was venture capitalist Lachy Groom, a well-known tech figure who once dated OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

The attacker reportedly targeted the home Groom shares with fellow investor Joshua, entering the house after pretending to be a delivery worker. The masked man carried a white box, asked for “Joshua,” and claimed he needed a signature for a package. What seemed like a normal delivery quickly turned into a violent crime.

How the Fake Delivery Entry Led to the $11M Loss

As the resident opened the door, the suspect asked to borrow a pen and then forced his way inside. Police sources say the attacker pulled a gun, tied the victim with duct tape, and stole the resident’s phone and laptop. He allegedly tortured the victim for nearly 90 minutes while foreign voices on a phone call listed his personal details.

During this time, the suspect transferred $11 million in Ethereum and Bitcoin out of the victim’s wallets. This case is now considered one of the city’s largest ever digital currency theft cases.

Police Investigating Possible Organized Crime Link

Investigators believe this was not a random heist. Early findings indicate that an organized crime group may be the mastermind behind the attack. No arrests have been made yet, and the San Francisco crypto theft investigation remains active. Police encourage anyone with information to contact the San Francisco Police Department's tip line.

The crime has raised safety concerns across the city, particularly among wealthy digital currency holders. Investor Garry Tan shared security footage of the incident online, asking for public help in finding the suspect, later deleting the tweet. Safety experts say kidnappings and crypto crime news are rising as criminals target investors showing signs of wealth.

Rising Crime in Digital Assets and Safety Concerns

The San Francisco crypto theft has also reopened debates about self-custody. Some investors, including Tan, publicly warned that holding large amounts of digital currency without professional vault storage can be dangerous. With digital currency stolen in multiple high-profile cases this year, many investors now fear becoming targets.

As police investigate, the city’s tech community is shaken. The attack on Groom’s home has placed a spotlight on both personal security and the growing threat of cryptocurrency theft in major tech hubs like San Francisco.
