Crypto Hack News: Harmony Hit by 4 Billion ONE Token Exploit

This crypto hack news centers on Harmony, the Layer 1 blockchain, after on-chain data revealed an unauthorized mint of 4 billion ONE tokens, equal to roughly 26% of total supply.

The mint was carried out through empty blocks, and the token's price crashed as the news spread.

The Exploit: How 4 Billion ONE Tokens Were Minted

On-chain researcher the_juice_berg first flagged the exploit, reporting that the unauthorized 4 billion ONE mint went through empty blocks, blocks that normally carry no transactions, which let the extra supply enter circulation without showing up as a typical transfer or contract call.

Of those 4 billion, 2.8 billion were quickly funneled to exchanges as the price crashed.

The report also noted that Harmony's totalSupply endpoint was hiding the actual inflation from public view, meaning anyone checking the official supply figure at the time would not have seen the newly minted tokens reflected.

Tracing the Stolen Tokens

A follow-up post broke down exactly where the minted tokens ended up, giving a clearer picture of how much damage is still reversible:

  • The attacker has roughly 115 million ONE left to sell onchain, about 2.9% of the ~4 billion minted, meaning only a small sliver of the exploit's proceeds remains outside exchanges.

  • The overwhelming majority, around 97%, is already on exchanges, effectively out of reach of any onchain freeze or rollback.

  • Of that 97%, tokens have either already been sold or are sitting in deposit wallets ready to sell, splitting the remaining risk between funds already cashed out and funds still one step away from being cashed out.

Harmony's Response: Wallet Freezes and a Pending Patch

Harmony's official account confirmed the incident and named the wallets involved. The team asked all exchanges to block and freeze funds tracing back to four specific wallet addresses tied to the exploit:

Beyond naming the wallets, Harmony stated:

  • The team is working with its own staff and appropriate exchanges to stop and freeze the funds.

  • A patch and rollback options are being worked on.

  • Updates will follow as new information becomes available.

  • Due to the incident, Harmony has paused bridge.harmony.one.

  • All validators have been asked to upgrade to a new patch that prevents any further minting, with the fix published on GitHub.

  • Harmony said it will follow up with another update specifically addressing the tokens that were already minted during the exploit.

Market Fallout: ONE Price and Trading Volume

This round of crypto hack news hit ONE's price hard. Per CoinMarketCap's At the time of publication data, $ONE is trading at $0.0008114, down 34% over the past 24 hours.

Market cap has fallen in step, now sitting at $12.18 million, also down 34%. The most striking number is trading volume, which jumped to $46.69 million, a spike of over 4,031% in a single day.

That surge pushed the Vol/Mkt Cap ratio to 378.02%, far beyond normal levels and a clear sign of panic-driven selling. Circulating and total supply both stand at 15.01 billion ONE, with no max supply cap in place.

Once news of the unauthorized mint started spreading, ONE didn't just dip, it dropped sharply and fast, as holders who saw the exploit reports moved to sell almost immediately, which is exactly why trading volume exploded the way it did.

A token losing over a third of its value in a single day, alongside a volume spike in the thousands of percent, points to a market reacting to fear of further dilution rather than any single trade.

With billions of extra tokens now technically in circulation and a large chunk of them already parked on exchanges, that selling pressure may not ease until Harmony's follow-up fix for the already-minted supply is out and the market has a clearer picture of what happens to those tokens.

Outlook: What Happens Next

This crypto hack news story is still developing. Harmony has not yet confirmed the root cause of how the empty-block minting was carried out, but it has already pushed out a validator patch aimed at stopping any further unauthorized minting, and it has paused bridge.harmony.one while the situation is contained.

A separate fix to address the tokens already minted during the exploit has not yet been released.

The team's stated priority for now is coordinating with exchanges to freeze the four identified wallets and prevent the remaining unsold tokens from reaching the market.

Recent Crypto Hacks in Context

This isn't an isolated incident this year. In late July 2026, WEMIX confirmed a separate 6.25 million breach tied to unauthorized issuance of its WEMIX stablecoin, prompting the team to suspend bridges and liquidity pools.

Around the same time , three other protocols, AFX, BSquared Network, and the VerusCoin Ethereum bridge, lost a combined $35.55 million in separate bridge exploits within the same window.

Together with Harmony's exploit, these incidents point to a summer marked by repeated bridge and contract-level failures across the industry.

Conclusion

This crypto hack news shows Harmony scrambling to contain the fallout from a 4 billion ONE unauthorized mint, with most of the funds already funneled through exchanges before the network could react.

With freezes in progress and a patch still pending, the coming days will show whether Harmony can recover the exploited value or whether the bulk of the damage is already done.
