PI Network News: Protocol 27 Update

Pi Network News: Ecosystem Growth, KYC Progress and DEX Plans 2026

Pi Network news today centers on the Protocol 27 update as the network moves toward its mainnet launch. As a Pioneer reported, node software behind the network moved to version 27.1.0, and the shift lines up with a September 15 target date the Core Team set for the full mainnet rollout. This marks a close move toward the wider Pi Network September 2026 update cycle.

Pi Network News: Protocol 27 Node Software Moves to Version 27.1.0

Docker tags for the $PI node now show p27.1.0 across both Mainnet Relay and Organization Mainnet builds, replacing the earlier V26 line, as per the shared pictures from the community member.

Protocol 27 Node Software Moves to Version 27.1.0

The version update is one of the clearest signs yet that the network is moving toward the planned Protocol 27 rollout. The update appeared under the labels mainnet-relay-v1.0-p27.1.0 and organization-mainnet-v1.0-p27.1.0, pushed by a contributor known as pierre1447 for linux/amd64 systems.

Node operators will need to install version 27.1, once the core team confirms the migration, following the same step-by-step process used in the previous protocol upgrades.

As of early September, the main network still ran on Protocol 26, while an early test network had already switched to 27 and a second test network lagged slightly behind.

What the Pi Network Protocol 27 Upgrade Actually Changes for Users

Protocol 27 is described by the Core Team as the last planned upgrade in the current development plan. This upgrade adds more flexible and secure ways for accounts and apps to authorize on-chain transactions through smart contracts.

It also lays groundwork for automated market maker liquidity pools and a built in decentralized exchange with an order book, alongside supporting RPC infrastructure.

Protocol 26 finished on the main network by its August 11 deadline, and the Core Team confirmed the September 15 target for this Network 27 update rollout on August 21.

Ahead of this Pi Network news today, some reports point to a possible Protocol 28 down the line, suggesting development keeps going past this round.

Pi Network Ecosystem Growth and KYC Migration Numbers This September

The Pi Network news today also highlights the ecosystem growth, building since open mainnet began after a firewall removal on February 20, 2025.

Smart contract support through Soroban went live around Protocol 23 in May 2026, and the network now reports roughly 421,000 active nodes.

App Studio has produced more than 7,900 AI generated apps, with some already handling payments. OpenPay has moved from testnet to mainnet functions, and the Launchpad has tested combined order book and liquidity pool mechanics with heavy participation from Pioneers.

Other additions include SoloHost for distributed computing tasks and a RoboPay partnership for robot services paid in $PI.

On identity checks, verified users sit between 17.7 and 18 million, with 16 to 17 million wallets successfully migrated to mainnet. More than 1 million community validators have completed hundreds of millions of verification tasks, and the first rounds of validator rewards have gone out. That still leaves a gap against the roughly 60 million total registered accounts, many stuck in queues or incomplete verification.

$PI Coin Price Today: A Small Move Inside a Much Bigger Market Rally

$PI coin price today sits at $0.0951, up 1.24% over the past 24 hours, the latest small $PI price up move in this update. Other figures from CoinMarketCap show:

Pi Coin Price Today

  • Market cap: $1.05 billion, up 1.24%

  • 24 hour volume: $5.18 million, down 5.94%

  • Fully diluted valuation: $9.5 billion

  • Total and max supply: 100 billion PI

  • Circulating supply: 11.14 billion PI

That gain looks modest next to Bitcoin's 4.13% jump over the same period, both moving higher on a broader market rally tied to dovish Fed signals rather than any $PI specific news.

What’s Next

For anyone tracking Pi Network news today, the coming days matter most for this Pi Network Protocol 27 upgrade and the wider $PI coin update price move it brings.

September 15–16 Fed rate decision is a major catalyst for the market which could shape the next few months for risk assets including $PI.

Whether node operators finish the switch to version 27.1 on schedule, and whether the mainnet DEX goes live without delay, will show if this large user base can turn into real on-chain activity rather than numbers sitting in a queue.
