Long known as the leading prediction market platform, Polymarket news has now expanded into leveraged derivatives trading. The company announced that its new perpetual futures product is live, offering leverage up to 20 times on a mix of cryptocurrencies, stocks, commodities, and indices.
The move marks a real shift in the business, pushing the exchange beyond event-based betting and into direct competition with established derivatives venues. This roundup covers what the new product offers, who can access it, and why the launch matters.

A new perpetual futures product, Polymarket Perps, went live on September 4, 2026
Leverage reaches up to 20x on crypto, stocks, commodities, and indices
Available internationally; blocked in the US, Canada, and several other jurisdictions
67 contracts were listed within hours, including BTC, ETH, SOL, gold, oil, and the S&P 500
The launch puts the platform in direct competition with Hyperliquid and Kalshi
Perpetual contracts let traders speculate on an asset's price with no expiration date, using leverage to control larger positions with a smaller amount of capital. The new product launched with support for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, HYPE, gold, silver, oil, and major equity indices including the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100.
Within hours, the platform reportedly carried 67 live markets, split across crypto, individual stocks such as Tesla and Samsung, commodities, and indices. Traders can go long or short, choose isolated or cross margin, and execute through an order book rather than an automated market maker.

| Feature | Details |
| Maximum leverage | Up to 20x |
| Contract type | Perpetual futures, no expiry |
| Initial markets | Crypto, stocks, commodities, indices |
| Positions | Long and short |
| Margin | Isolated and cross |
| Funding | Settled hourly |
| US access | Not permitted |
The documented fee schedule starts at 0.04% for takers and 0.0125% for makers, stepping down as 30-day volume rises, with a maker rebate available above certain thresholds. Funding settles hourly and is capped at 4% per hour in either direction, based on a premium index sampled from the order book every five seconds.
Maintenance margin equals 0.5 divided by the maximum leverage, so a market offering 20x leverage carries roughly 2.5% maintenance margin. Higher leverage magnifies both gains and losses, and positions below the maintenance threshold can be absorbed by an insurance fund, a standard risk feature across leveraged trading platforms.
Order placement is not permitted from the United States, Canada, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, or a few additional restricted regions, according to the exchange's own documentation. Access elsewhere still depends on local law.
The restriction traces back to a January 2022 CFTC order against the operating entity behind the platform, which required a wind-down of certain US-facing markets at the time. The company has since asked regulators about restoring American access to its onchain products, though no changes have taken effect.

The launch creates direct competition with Hyperliquid, a major decentralized derivatives exchange, and Kalshi, a US-regulated prediction market that launched its own perpetual contracts under CFTC oversight back in May 2026.
A lower fee schedule and existing liquidity from years of prediction-market activity are being pitched as the main differentiators.
Early volume on the new product, however, remains far behind Hyperliquid, which processes billions of dollars in daily perp volume, so there is significant ground left to cover.
January 2022: CFTC fines the operating entity and orders a wind-down of non-compliant markets
April 2026: Plans for perpetual futures products are signaled alongside a rival's own announcement
May 29, 2026: Kalshi launches its US-regulated perpetual contracts
September 4, 2026: The new perpetuals product launches internationally with up to 20x leverage
Billions of dollars in monthly volume have flowed through the underlying prediction markets, alongside hundreds of millions of dollars in total value locked, though that activity has been slipping as a competitor's volume grows. Entering leveraged derivatives adds a new revenue stream and a way to diversify beyond event-driven betting.
Even though early volume on the new product is a small fraction of what larger derivatives platforms handle in a single day, the launch signals a broader strategic pivot.
This launch marks a turning point for a platform built on prediction markets, now competing directly with dedicated derivatives exchanges. Eligible traders outside restricted jurisdictions can access leveraged crypto, stock, commodity, and index contracts, while US users remain limited to Kalshi's regulated alternative.
Going forward, watch for growth in liquidity and trading volume, the addition of new markets, any regulatory developments affecting US access, and how the product performs against Hyperliquid (HYPE) and Kalshi over time.
