Privacy Sector Crypto Performance, September 2026

The privacy sector becomes the only crypto category above the October 2025 high.

The privacy sector has become the only major cryptocurrency category trading above its level from Bitcoin's October 6, 2025, high, according to Glassnode data published on September 7, 2026.

The privacy sector is up 213% since that peak, while every other segment Glassnode tracks, including DeFi, Layer 1, and gaming, remains below its prior mark.

The rally has been driven largely by Zcash's ZEC, which has surged 2,496% over the past year and climbed from the 82nd largest cryptocurrency by market cap to 7th.

The privacy sector's total crypto market cap has grown from $7.1 billion a year ago to $33.6 billion, Glassnode reported.

Key Takeaways

  • The privacy sector is up 213% since Bitcoin's October 2025 high, the only crypto sector still above that mark, per Glassnode.

  • ZEC has surged 2,496% over the past year, jumping from rank 82 to rank 7 by market cap and now making up about 62% of the privacy sector.

  • Even without ZEC, the privacy sector's market-cap-weighted basket is still up 85% for the year, per Glassnode data.

Bitcoin itself remains about 36% below its October 2025 high, and the median asset among the top 200 cryptocurrencies is down 58% from that level.

Against that backdrop, the privacy sector's climb to $33.6 billion puts it close to Tron's current market capitalization, marking one of the sharpest sector rotations of the cycle.

What Is the Privacy Sector in Crypto?

The privacy sector refers to cryptocurrencies built specifically to shield transaction details, such as sender and receiver addresses, wallet balances, or transaction amounts, from public view.

Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, where every transaction is visible on a public ledger, privacy coins use cryptographic techniques like zero-knowledge proofs (used by ZEC) or ring signatures (used by Monero) to keep this data confidential.

Glassnode groups tokens such as ZEC, XMR, Dash, and Zen under this category when tracking crypto sector performance.

Demand for the privacy sector tends to rise during periods of increased regulatory scrutiny, surveillance concerns, or when traders look for assets outside mainstream, fully transparent blockchains

That demand shift is part of what analysts point to in explaining the sector's sharp divergence from the rest of the market this year.

ZEC Leads the Rally With a 2,496% Gain

ZEC now accounts for about 62% of the privacy sector's total market cap, giving its ZEC price action outsized influence over the category's overall numbers.

Zcash's ZEC market cap ranking has climbed from 82nd to 7th over the past year.

But Glassnode's data suggests the Zcash rally is not a one-token story.

Excluding ZEC entirely, the cap-weighted privacy basket is still up 85% over the past year, with Monero (XMR), Dash, and Zen also posting notable gains.

Among the 25 largest cryptocurrencies overall, only ZEC, HYPE, XMR, and WBT are trading above their October 6, 2025, prices, and two of those four are privacy coins.

Why Is the Privacy Sector Outperforming the Rest of the Crypto Market?

Privacy coins have outperformed because ZEC's 2,496% rally pulled the category's weighted average above Bitcoin's October 2025 high, but Glassnode notes the strength is broader: even without $ZEC, the sector's remaining privacy coins are still up 85% for the year, pointing to renewed demand across privacy-focused assets.

All Ten Crypto Sectors Post Gains Over the Past 30 Days

Every sector Glassnode tracks has risen over the past 30 days, and the privacy sector again led the pack with a 90% gain in that window.

Roughly $13 billion of the sector's $33.6 billion crypto market cap was added in just the last month, suggesting the recent surge has accelerated rather than cooled.

Despite that short-term broad-based recovery, the yearly picture has not shifted: privacy remains the only sector trading above its October 2025 benchmark.

Conclusion

Market analysts note that the privacy sector's outperformance reflects a narrow but pronounced rotation into a handful of assets rather than a market-wide recovery.

With ZEC representing roughly 62% of the sector's market cap, the category's headline gains remain closely tied to a single asset's price action, and a sharp pullback in $ZEC could quickly narrow the gap between the privacy sector and the rest of the market.
