Solana just got a lot more room to work with. The network's official account confirmed that 100M CU blocks are live on mainnet today, July 29, 2026. This is one of the biggest capacity jumps in Solana's history.
The Solana upgrade is called SIMD-0286. It raises the block compute limit from 60 million to 100 million compute units. In simple terms, each block can now do 66% more work than before.
Solana's block limit jumped from 60M to 100M compute units, a 66% capacity boost, live on mainnet from July 29, 2026.
Nearly 1 in 9 blocks were running near full capacity over the past year, mostly during high-traffic trading moments.
Per-account write limits stay at 12M CUs, so the new space adds parallel room instead of letting one hot account eat the whole unit.
Compute units (CUs) measure how much work a transaction needs. A block has a cap on the total CUs it can hold. When that cap fills up, new transactions have to wait for the next unit.
Solana raised this cap once before, from 50M to 60M, in July 2025. This new jump to 100M is bigger and comes about a year later.
Real usage pushed for this change. Since last July, 11.2% of all blocks touched 56M CUs or more, close to the old ceiling. That pressure builds fast during volatile markets, exactly when people most need their trades to land.
SolanaFloor also confirmed the rollout , calling it a jump in block capacity that lets more transactions process during busy periods.
The good news is that this extra room does not remove the 12M cap on any single account. So one busy token or app cannot fill the whole unit by itself. Everything else still gets fair space.
The change went through a feature gate, tested first on testnet and devnet before mainnet. Full technical specs, including the activation schedule and network readiness data, are laid out on the official Solana upgrade page.
Validators needed faster block propagation before this could go live safely. Over 70% of mainnet stake now runs XDP, a kernel-bypass networking upgrade that speeds up how blocks travel across the network. That adoption level is why engineers judged this activation safe.
Solana says block times stay at 400ms even with the bigger blocks. No breaking changes and no indexing changes are required for apps or exchanges.
Solana's own account says this is just the first step. Solana Alpenglow upgrade and 200ms slot times are planned next, aiming to make the network both bigger and faster at the same time.
This upgrade fits a clear pattern. Solana keeps raising block capacity in steps: 50M, then 60M, then 100M CUs, each one tested on testnet and devnet first.
The real signal to watch is whether transaction fees stay low and block times hold steady at 400ms during the next high-traffic event, like a major token launch. If that holds, it confirms the network's engineering claims. If congestion returns quickly, even at 100M CUs, it may point to demand growing faster than capacity, which would put pressure on the next scheduled upgrade.
Mainnet activation: Live, confirmed by Solana's official account today.
Devnet: Active since epoch 1100.
Testnet: Active since epoch 983.
Breaking change: No.
XDP adoption: Over 70% of the mainnet stake.
