In today's crypto news, Zcash News is focused on the network's next big governance moment. The community vote starts on August 25, 2026, and runs for roughly 18 days.
Sean Bowe (ebfull), a Zcash co-founder, confirmed the announcement. At stake is the scope of the upcoming NU7 upgrade, and the vote has been a long time coming.
The announcement was also reported by WuBlock123, which highlighted Sean Bowe's confirmation that the community vote will begin on August 25 and run for approximately 18 days, with a minimum participation threshold of 1 million ZEC.
According to the NU7 Token Holder discussion published on the Zcash Community Forum, an earlier governance vote was postponed after the Orchard counterfeiting bug and Ironwood/NU6.3 work became higher priorities.
Now, Valar Group and Project Tachyon are calling for a fresh round, this time using a new privacy-focused voting system built specifically for the process.
The governance process outlined on the Zcash Community Forum explains that voting will take place on a dedicated privacy-preserving chain developed by Valar Group. Key details include:
Voters need spendable shielded funds in Ironwood at snapshot time (August 24, 2026, 19:00 UTC)
Eligible ZEC can vote until September 12, 2026, 19:00 UTC
A distributed election authority, made up of at least 10 validators, counts votes without ever learning who cast them
Results get published shortly after voting wraps up
The shielded design keeps voter privacy intact while still producing a tally anyone can verify.
For the results to be considered representative, voter turnout must meet the following threshold:
Requirement | Detail |
Minimum participation | 1,000,000 ZEC |
Snapshot network | Ironwood |
Supporting wallet | Vizor (confirmed) |
If participation falls below the 1 million ZEC threshold, the outcome will not be considered representative of the broader coinholder community.
Five questions are lined up for this poll:
Issuance smoothing—Replace halvings with a gradual curve, or keep the halving schedule as is
NSM reissuance start date—Begin fee reissuance right after NSM activation, or hold off until around 2032
Sprout deprecation - When to finally disable old v4 transactions
Block time reduction—Whether to cut block time from 75 seconds down to 25, per ZIP-218
NU7 launch schedule—Ship on time and drop whatever isn't ready, or delay until every feature is complete
Each question comes with an abstain option, and no matter what gets decided, total ZEC supply stays untouched.
According to the latest Zcash News, the timing reflects lessons learned from the earlier cancelled governance attempt. The fee-burning half of the network sustainability mechanism already has approval.
What remains are more complex decisions, including issuance smoothing, deprecation timelines, and technical milestones that still require community approval.
Once voting opens, wallets like Vizor will support participation directly, so coinholders won't need to jump through extra hoops.
The whole process is also designed to be auditable.Anyone interested can check Valar Group's public tools to monitor the vote tally and verify the process independently.
The final results are expected shortly after voting closes on September 12, 2026.
Among today's crypto news developments, this Zcash news has shown only a limited market reaction despite the governance announcement.
At the time of writing, as per CoinMarketCap, the token was trading around $511.69, down roughly 0.91% over the past 24 hours, suggesting that traders have not yet priced in the upcoming NU7 community vote.
Investors appear to be waiting for the August 25 voting period and the final outcome before taking larger positions.
