What is Crypto Wallet

A cryptocurrency wallet is a software application or physical device that stores the cryptographic keys needed to access and manage cryptocurrency — enabling you to send transactions, receive funds, and interact with DeFi and dApps. Despite the name, wallets don't store coins (which exist on the blockchain); they store the private keys proving ownership. HOW WALLETS WORK When you create a wallet, it generates a seed phrase (12 or 24 random BIP-39 words). From this seed phrase, private keys are derived using HD (Hierarchical Deterministic) standards (BIP-32/44). Private keys generate public keys, which produce wallet addresses. Your wallet software manages this complexity — you see your balance and transaction interface. TYPES BY CONNECTIVITY Hot Wallets (Internet-Connected): Private keys on an internet-connected device. Convenient for frequent transactions but exposed to online threats. Types include: Browser extensions (MetaMask, Phantom, Rabby), Mobile apps (Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet, Rainbow), Desktop (Exodus, Electrum). Cold Wallets (Offline): Private keys stored entirely offline. Maximum security for significant holdings. Types: Hardware wallets (Ledger Nano X, Trezor Model T, Coldcard — dedicated devices with secure chips), Paper wallets (printed key pairs — largely obsolete). TYPES BY CUSTODY Custodial: Exchange holds your keys (Binance, CoinDCX accounts). Convenient but introduces counterparty risk — FTX and WazirX failures showed custodial risk is real. Non-Custodial: You hold keys. Full control, full responsibility. No third party can freeze, confiscate, or lose your funds. RECOMMENDED SETUP FOR INDIA Regular trading: Custodial account on a regulated Indian exchange (CoinDCX, ZebPay). Significant holdings (over ₹1 lakh): Hardware wallet (Ledger or Trezor). DeFi: MetaMask browser extension connected to your hardware wallet for transaction signing. THE GOLDEN RULE: Your seed phrase IS your crypto. Store it handwritten on paper in a fireproof safe. Never photograph, digitise, or share it with anyone.
