An Initial DEX Offering (IDO) is a token launch mechanism where a new cryptocurrency project issues and sells its tokens directly through a decentralised exchange (DEX) or a dedicated IDO launchpad platform providing immediate liquidity on a DEX from the moment of launch, without the need for centralised exchange listings or traditional investor gatekeeping.
HOW IDOS WORK
A project creates a liquidity pool on a DEX (Uniswap, PancakeSwap, Raydium) pairing their new token with a base currency (ETH, BNB, SOL). Initial token prices are set by the initial pool ratio. Early investors who participate in the IDO receive tokens at the initial price before the pool is opened to general trading. Once the IDO concludes, the liquidity pool opens and public trading begins immediately.
IDO LAUNCHPAD PLATFORMS
Most IDOs are not conducted directly on DEXs but through specialised launchpad platforms that vet projects, conduct KYC, and manage fair allocation:
PolkaStarter: Multi-chain IDO launchpad, one of the first. Gained popularity for Ethereum and Polkadot ecosystem projects.
TrustPad, GameFi.org, Seedify: Gaming-focused launchpads.
Solanium, AcceleRaytor: Solana-native IDO platforms.
Binance Launchpool / Launchpad: Though technically an IEO (centralised exchange), functions similarly. Projects apply to launchpads, undergo due diligence, and the launchpad allocates guaranteed buy-in slots to platform token stakers.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN AN IDO
Acquire and stake the launchpad's native token to earn allocation tickets. The more tokens staked, the higher tier and larger guaranteed allocation. During the IDO window, contribute the required amount. Tokens are distributed at the close of the sale. Many IDO participants aim to sell quickly upon DEX listing for a quick profit, though this is high-risk as post-IDO prices frequently drop below IDO price.
RISKS OF IDO INVESTING
Bot competition for allocations. "Pump and dump" by insiders who received tokens cheaply. Many IDO projects fail to deliver on roadmap promises. Launchpad reputation varies enormously; always research the launchpad's track record alongside the project itself.
