What is Non-Custodial Wallet

A non-custodial wallet is a cryptocurrency wallet where you and only you hold and control the private keys that give access to your cryptocurrency. No third party has knowledge of, access to, or control over your funds. This is the purest expression of the crypto maxim "not your keys, not your coins" true self-sovereignty over your digital assets.

THE FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCE FROM CUSTODIAL WALL

ETSCustodial wallet (exchange): The exchange holds private keys. You trust them to keep funds safe and allow withdrawals. Exchange failures (FTX, Celsius), hacks (WazirX, Mt. Gox), or regulatory freezes can prevent access to or eliminate your funds.

Non-custodial wallet: Your private keys live on your device or hardware. No company can freeze, confiscate, or lose your funds. The only way to lose access is to lose your own private keys or seed phrase.

HOW NON-CUSTODIAL WALLETS WORK

When you create a non-custodial wallet, the software generates a random seed phrase (12 or 24 words derived from BIP-39 wordlist). All your private keys are mathematically derived from this seed phrase using HD wallet derivation paths (BIP-32/44). You write down the seed phrase and store it securely offline. The wallet software stores an encrypted version of your keys locally, protected by your password/PIN. When you sign transactions, your private key signs locally on your device it never leaves your wallet.

TYPES OF NON-CUSTODIAL WALLETS

Software (Hot): MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Phantom, Rabby, Electrum convenient, internet-connected, appropriate for active use with smaller amounts.
Hardware (Cold): Ledger, Trezor, Coldcard keys stored in a secure chip, never exposed to internet-connected systems. Best for long-term storage of significant holdings.
Paper Wallets: Physical printout of keys cold but fragile and inconvenient.

SEED PHRASE SECURITY: THE GOLDEN RULES

Write it on paper never digital. Store in multiple secure locations (home safe + bank safety deposit box). Never share with anyone. Never enter on any website no legitimate service will ever ask for your seed phrase. Test recovery before depositing significant funds.
