What is Shilling

Shilling in cryptocurrency refers to the practice of aggressively and often deceptively promoting a cryptocurrency project,  typically one the promoter holds, with the intent to increase its price so the shill can profit from selling their holdings. Shilling ranges from undisclosed paid promotion by influencers to coordinated community campaigns designed to create artificial hype around specific tokens.

THE SPECTRUM OF SHILL

  • INGOrganic Advocacy: A genuine believer in a project's potential enthusiastically recommending it. Not shilling,  honest sharing of investment conviction with disclosure of holdings.

  • Undisclosed Paid Promotion: An influencer receives payment (cash or tokens) to promote a project without disclosing this relationship. This is deceptive and illegal in most jurisdictions under advertising disclosure laws.

  • Coordinated Shill Campaigns: Organised groups where each member posts similar positive content about a token simultaneously  creating artificial social proof and FOMO.

  • "Whale" Shilling: Large token holders promoting to smaller investors to create demand before selling their large holdings ("exit liquidity" creation).

FAMOUS SHILLING SCANDALS

  • Kim Kardashian: Paid $250,000 to promote EthereumMax (EMAX) on Instagram to her 225 million followers without disclosure. Settled with the SEC for $1.26 million in 2022.

  • Floyd Mayweather and DJ Khaled: Paid to promote ICOs without disclosure, both settled SEC charges.

  • BitConnect promoters: YouTube influencers promoting BitConnect were named in a $2.4 billion fraud complaint. Matt Damon's "Fortune Favors the Brave" Crypto.com campaign was  legal but poorly timed at the 2021 peak.

HOW TO IDENTIFY SHILLING

Sudden, coordinated positive posts across multiple platforms. Promoter cannot explain the technology in any depth. Claimed price targets with no analytical basis. Urgency framing ("last chance"). No disclosure of token holdings or paid relationship. Check if influencers are simultaneously dumping tokens on-chain while promoting them,  blockchain data is public.
