Kesennuma Hackathon 2025: Civic Tech in AI & Web3 for Community Renewal
Kesennuma Hackathon 2025 is a global hackathon and residency happening in Kesennuma City, Miyagi, Japan.
Dates: October 5–17, 2025
Main Hackathon: October 10–12, 2025
Kesennuma Hackathon is a civic tech hackathon and two-week residency to be held from October 5-17, 2025, in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. With a focus on AI and Web3, this global event invites specialists—developers, engineers, designers, and researchers—from both Japan and overseas to collaborate directly with the local community. After a few days of ideation and collaboration (Oct 6-9) to identify regional challenges, particularly issues like declining birth rates, an aging population, and economic stagnation, teams will sprint to build technological prototypes during the hackathon proper (Oct 10-12), followed by a public demonstration and showcase on October 13. The final days (Oct 14-17) are dedicated to refining and improving solutions based on feedback, with an eye toward real implementation.
The event is led by the Kesennuma Hackatsuon Executive Committee, with Hikari Igarashi as Committee Lead and Luciano DeAngelo as Co-Lead. Local partners include Kesennuma City Government, Kesennuma Town University (Machi Daigaku), and other community groups. Numbers for total guests, speakers, and media will be shared closer to the date.
Current supporters include:
FORUM8 – a global engineering software company
ENS (Ethereum Name Service) – a key name in the Web3 Space
Hoya Boya, Kesennuma’s friendly city mascot
During the final showcase at Pier 7, teams will present their projects. Some local and global organizations may also display their tools and ideas.
Here’s why Kesennuma Hackatsuon 2025 stands out:
Real Impact: Build projects that help real people in Kesennuma, not just ideas on paper.
Hands-On Tech: Work with the newest AI and Web3 tools while solving local problems.
Global + Local Mix: Learn from experts around the world and from Kesennuma’s own community.
Unique Format: A two-week stay gives more time for teamwork and feedback than a typical weekend hackathon.
Showcase & Networking: Present your work to the public and connect with people who can help bring ideas to life.
Culture & Tradition: The event also celebrates 350 years of single-line fishing, a proud part of Kesennuma’s history.
Team Building (Oct 6–9): See how groups combine local knowledge with global tech skills.
Community-Focused Problems: Projects must target real needs like senior care or new jobs.
Smart Use of AI & Web3: Expect creative but practical uses of Blockchain and AI.
Mentorship & Learning: Participants get guidance from experts throughout the event.
Demo & Public Reception: On the final day, watch teams present their solutions and hear feedback from the community.
Long-Term Plans: Some projects may move forward after the event with local support.
Kesennuma Hackathon 2025 is more than a hackathon—it’s a chance to use technology to help a city grow and thrive while learning, networking, and experiencing Japanese culture. For more Crypto Events in Japan, visit our website, Coin Gabbar.
