Rektober 2026: $1.09B Liquidations Revive 2025 Crash Fears

Rektober 2026: Is Uptober Losing Momentum After $1.08B Liquidation?

Uptober 2026 was meant to be a victory lap. Instead, $1.09 billion in leveraged bets vanished within 24 hours, and Rektober 2026 is now the nickname traders are using.

The CMC Fear & Greed Index touched an extreme-greed peak of 82 on August 27, stood at 71 a month ago, and now reads 56, Neutral.  The crypto market today has steadied, but the timing stings.

The recent flush landed just a day before the first anniversary of the October 10, 2025 crypto crash, the largest wipeout in crypto history.

From Uptober to Rektober 2026: How Crypto Liquidation Topped $1B in 24 Hours

The Bulls took the brunt of today’s crypto liquidation. Long positions took $916.92 million of the damage, while shorts accounted for only $161.44 million of the total. Ether and Bitcoin longs led the losses as both broke key support levels:

  • ETH longs: $351M, as ether slid below $2,500

  • BTC longs: $304M, as bitcoin dipped under $81,000

  • Long share of total: about 85%

  • Total liquidation in the last 24-hours: $1.08 billion

Ether’s toll stands out. It lost more than bitcoin to liquidations despite a market cap roughly a fifth the size. The latest hours look different. Over 12 hours, shorts made up $46.46M of the $62.98M liquidated, a sign the rebound squeezed bears.

Crypto Crash October 2025 vs. 2026: Same Month, Far Less Leverage

The record still belongs to the crypto crash of October 2025, when $19.16B was liquidated after a US tariff hike on China, per CoinGlass liquidation records. That is almost double the second largest event, $9.94B in April 2021.

Top Three Crypto Liquidations

Rektober 2026 looks small beside it:

  • Size: about $1.08B, roughly one-seventeenth of 2025

  • Trigger: gradual pressure from Fed rate-hike expectations, higher Treasury yields and costly oil, not a single shock

  • Leverage: open interest peaked near $217B in 2025, then fell about 43%, so far less fuel sits in the system now

  • Price move: double-digit losses for bitcoin in 2025, but low single digits now, with a dip near $80,300 before a rebound above $82,000

Most comparisons treat the crypto crash 2026 headlines as a mechanical long flush, not a systemic unwind.

Crypto Market Today: Total Value Falls and Sentiment Cools to Neutral

The crypto market today looks bruised but calm. The October 2026 slide trimmed total value, per CoinMarketCap data:

Crypto Market Today

  • Total market cap: $2.78T, down 1.67%

  • CMC20 index: $170.83, down 1.12%

  • Fear & Greed: 56, Neutral, down from 67 last week and 71 last month

  • Altcoin Season Index: 59

The drop from 82 in late August is steep, though still far from the extreme-fear low of 5 in February.

Major Coins Slide Across the Board

  • Bitcoin price today: $82,620.73, down 0.42% in 24 hours and 4.29% over seven days

  • Ethereum: $2,498.25, down 2.43% today and 8.92% on the week

  • XRP: $1.39, down 1.01% and 9.01%

  • Solana: $110.33, down 4.02% and 9.28%

  • BNB: $742.77, down 3.40% and 4.27%

  • Hyperliquid: $86.10, down 1.24% and 4.71%

Solana, XRP and ether fell hardest, each near 9% on the week. Bitcoin lost about 4%.

US Spot Crypto ETFs Data: Outflows Weigh on Bitcoin and Ether Funds

Spot crypto ETFs added to the pressure. US funds saw $323.53M in net outflows, per SoSoValue dashboard. SoSoValue data for October 8 shows where it came from:

US Spot Crypto ETFs Data

  • Bitcoin ETFs: -$244.13M across 12 funds, with net assets at $104.91B

  • Ether ETFs: -$72.54M across 11 funds, with $15.64B in assets

  • ZEC, HYPE and SOL funds: -18.66M,-9.70M and -$3.32M

  • XRP ETFs: +$8.17M, the only inflow among the larger funds

The longer view is less bleak. Bitcoin funds still show $1.51B in net inflows over 30 days. Solana funds took in $241.37M and ether funds $147.30M over the same stretch. The outflows hurt sentiment, but they have not erased the month’s gains.

What Could Shape the Next Major Moves: CPI Data, Fed and Midterms

Three scheduled events can shift leverage and sentiment quickly:

  • CPI data: the September reading lands October 14, per the BLS calendar

  • Fed rate decision: the October 27-28 meeting ends with a decision on October 28, per the Federal Reserve calendar

  • US midterm elections: November 3, a source of policy risk for markets

Spot crypto ETF flows matter too. A return to inflows would ease selling, while more outflows would keep bulls cautious.

Crypto rektober 2026 may prove a one-day reset, not a turning point. Open interest is far lower than a year ago, and sentiment sits in neutral. If inflation and the Fed stay calm, Uptober 2026 can still be salvaged. If not, the next flush may find longs crowded again.
