US Government Bitcoin Transfer Hits $470M: Is a Sale Coming Next?

The latest US government bitcoin transfer is the crypto news today that traders are tracking.

On October 7, 2026, Arkham Intelligence reported that the US government moves $470M in BTC, WBTC and USDT to likely Coinbase Prime deposit addresses.

They said the coins were seized from the Bitfinex hacker and Alameda Research.

This bitcoin news today raised one question, and no agency has announced a sale so far.

US Government Moves $470M: What Did Arkham Report?

Arkham shared the US government bitcoin transfer in its tweet on X at 17:05 UTC (10:35 PM IST) on October 7, 2026.Arkham official Tweet

Detail

Arkham Report

Total value

About $470M

Assets

BTC, WBTC, USDT

Destination

Likely Coinbase Prime deposit addresses

Origin

Seized crypto tied to the Bitfinex hacker and Alameda Research

Arkham traces these wallets with onchain data. "Likely" matters, because the addresses are flagged as probable, not confirmed.

What Are BTC, WBTC and USDT in This Move?

  • BTC: the original coin.

  • WBTC: an Ethereum token that tracks BTC.

  • USDT: Tether's dollar-pegged stablecoin.

The US government transfers BTC, WBTC, USDT in one batch. A stablecoin move may add less sell pressure than BTC.

Seized Bitfinex Hack Bitcoin: Where Is It Now?

The Bitfinex hack happened in 2016. In February 2022, the Justice Department announced that law enforcement had seized over $3.6B in crypto linked to the breach.

Prosecutors later argued, in a January 2025 filing in a Washington federal court, that the Bitfinex assets should return to the exchange as in-kind restitution. Arkham did not link the October 7 move to that process.

The Alameda Research bitcoin, from the trading firm tied to FTX, is the second origin Arkham named.

Will US Government Sell Bitcoin? What the Executive Order Says

The March 2025 executive order created the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and says BTC deposited into it shall not be sold. A separate stockpile covers other forfeited assets under Treasury stewardship strategies.

Arkham did not say whether these coins sit inside the reserve. Readers can check US government bitcoin holdings today on Arkham's dashboard.

Coinbase said in a July 2024 blog post that the Marshals Service chose Coinbase Prime for custody and trading.

That US government Coinbase Prime relationship means a deposit alone does not prove a sale. Each time the US government moves bitcoin to Prime, sale fears return.

Why Is US Government Moving Bitcoin Now?

Arkham gave no reason. Three explanations are possible, and none is confirmed:

  • Custody: consolidating seized bitcoin at one provider.

  • Restitution: preparing assets for return to owners.

  • Liquidation: selling coins through Coinbase Prime.

Is US Government Selling Bitcoin Today?

No. As of October 8, 2026, no federal agency has announced a sale. Arkham reported only that government-linked wallets sent about $470M to likely Coinbase Prime addresses.

A deposit can mean custody, restitution or liquidation, so this US government bitcoin transfer alone does not prove a sale.

Expert View: What Could Happen Next?

Analysts following crypto news may watch the US government bitcoin transfer for three signals:

  • More outflows from the same wallets.

  • Statements from the Justice Department or Treasury.

  • Coinbase Prime movements toward exchanges.

Any bitcoin price after US government transfer news depends on whether coins reach trading venues, and sell pressure would show up first in onchain data. Price impact, if any, stays uncertain.
