Altcoin Season 2026 has not fully started, but early signs are clear. The CoinMarketCap Altcoin Season Index now reads 61 out of 100. A month ago, it stood at 23. That is a sharp climb in a short time.

Still, 61 sits below the 75 level that usually confirms a full altseason. The market is in a middle zone. Some coins are rising fast. Many are not.
Here are the key readings of the crypto market today, as of October 1 2026 from CoinMarketCap live data:
Altcoin Season Index: 61/100 (yesterday 60, last week 52)
Yearly range: high of 67 on Oct. 2, 2025; low of 14 on Dec. 19, 2025
Bitcoin dominance: 58.6%, down 1.11%
Ethereum's share: 11.5%
All other coins: 30.0%, up 0.92%
Total crypto market cap (Oct 1): $2.87T
Fear & Greed Index: 67 (Greed)

Chart data adds some support. Analyst Matthew Hyland says altcoin dominance (OTHERS.D/BTC.D) has broken out on the monthly chart. It had been stuck in a range since early 2025. The ratio fell hard after 2022, then drifted near 0.12–0.15% until mid-2026. A fresh green candle now confirms the break.

Bitcoin's Strong Third Quarter Brought Fresh Money Into Altcoins Too
BTC is on pace to close Q3 up 43%, its best third quarter in nine years, according to Santiment data. The usual Q3 average is 8.61%. Altcoins gained 38% since June and now hold $1.16T. BTC added over $508B in value. Altcoins took in over $319B.

September also favored crypto. Bitcoin rose about 7%. The S&P 500 barely moved, and gold fell more than 6%. U.S. spot BTC ETFs drew billions of dollars, and Strategy bought 1,665 more $BTC.
Bitcoin price today as of October 1, per CoinGecko:

Current BTC price: $83,790.80, slightly up 0.6%
24-hour trading volume: $35.56 billion
Total market cap: $1.684 trillion
Circulating Supply: 20.091M out of total 21M $BTC
Total treasury holding: 1,917,676 $BTC
One caution stands out. Spot BTC ETFs posted $185.60M in net outflows in the SoSoValue’s latest daily reading for September 30. This marked the first outflow after nine consecutive days of net inflows.
Trader @el_crypto_prof, active since 2015, expects a stronger run than 2021. He sees it as a second wave after 2016–17 and 2020–21. That fits the four-year halving cycle idea.

The data shows real differences. In 2021, Bitcoin dominance fell from about 70% to near 40%. Many mid and small caps gained 10x to 100x. The October 2025 peak put $BTC near $126,000, and altcoins then fell sharply. Many top 50 coins still sit below those highs.
ETF money also favors Bitcoin. That makes rotation into smaller coins less automatic. A second wave may be more selective.
Altcoins swing harder than Bitcoin. Annual volatility often tops 80%, versus 50–70% for BTC. Small caps have lost 90–99% in past crashes. Thin order books and heavy leverage make moves sharper. The same trader warns of a long bear market after any peak.
The next test is breadth. A further drop in Bitcoin dominance, paired with an index above 75, would give Altcoin Season 2026 a firm base. Until then, gains will likely stay selective.
