In Crypto news today Base Cobalt upgrade live on mainnet since 18:00 UTC on September 30, 2026.
According to the network's engineering blog. The docs repository logs the same activation time. Cobalt is the third release of 2026, after Azul in May and Beryl in June.
The upgrade overview lists these changes:
Feature | What it does |
Validity Transactions | Includes signed transactions only when onchain conditions match |
Composite Policies | Combines allowlists and blocklists with AND or OR logic |
Schedule Multiplier Updates | Schedules display changes for events like splits |
seizeWithMemo | Lets authorized administrators reassign balances with a memo |
Dynamic Upgrades, TEE migration | Metrics-only node scheduling; onchain signer attestation |
The TEE change verifies AWS Nitro attestations onchain, replacing an external proving service, per the same overview.
Users submit one signed transaction with conditions, such as price or block number.
The network holds it, checks conditions as each block is built, and includes it only when all are met. If a deadline passes first, it is never included.
Base Validity Transactions explained through the official example: a trader attaches a pool price of at least 4,000 USDC and a block limit below 1,157,000.
The trader signs the swap and sets both conditions. The specification covers fees and ordering.
Base B20 token standard new features arrive in three parts:
Policies: B20 Composite Policies KYC allowlist rules let issuers reuse a KYC list and sanctions blocklist. If either provider removes a holder, the next transfer fails.
Multipliers: Schedule Multiplier Updates follow the ERC-8056 standard. In the official example, a 2x split turns a raw balance of 100 into 200 displayed shares.
Seizure: Base seizeWithMemo function meaning is simple: an issuer-authorized administrator reassigns a balance with an onchain memo, only where seizure is enabled.
The Beryl release went live on June 25, 2026 and introduced B20 tokens. Where the Base Beryl upgrade created the standard, Cobalt adds conditional execution and issuer controls. Indexers must adopt the new ABI, the blog states.
Base third mainnet upgrade Cobalt reached testnet on September 23, 2026, and Base Cobalt mainnet activation followed a week later, per the upgrades page.
With Base Cobalt live, the Base mainnet upgrade also runs Dynamic Upgrades in metrics-only mode.
Over the coming months, the network plans three launches:
200ms blocks: Base 200ms block time would cut 2s blocks tenfold. Base block time 200ms upgrade date is unconfirmed, though the docs list a follow-up named Denim as an October 2026 planning target.
Smart accounts: Base smart accounts become first-class at protocol level, so Base gas sponsorship and transaction batching need no extra contracts.
Glamsterdam: A subset of EVM improvements from the Glamsterdam upgrade.
Coinbase Base Cobalt upgrade news also spread on X. Wu Blockchain also covered this news in a tweet, citing The Block.
Analysts tracking this Ethereum Layer 2 upgrade cycle may read Cobalt as a push toward tokenized assets, since composable compliance and recovery tools suit regulated issuers.
Adoption could depend on wallet and custody support. The planned smart accounts and gas sponsorship work, including Base Layer 2 smart accounts gas sponsorship, is the next item to watch.
