In a coordinated operation carried out recently, Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Branch joined forces with Binance to clamp down on the surging Digital Arrest Crypto Scam, targeting peoples across South and Southeast Asia regions. The scammer fake themselves as law officials and compelled victims to transfer substantial amounts of money in the form of Cryptocurrencies by threatening them in the name of “Digital Arrest”. Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of Binance, played a major character to track down the activities on Blockchain and transferring with cross border stations.
Although they targeted many innocent people, the recent and most highlighted cases of Digital Arrest Crypto Scam include the incidents where a large sum of money is extorted.
In Gujarat, a 90 year old was duped by swindlers and ended up paying ₹1.25 crore (around $149,700) after they falsely charged him by pretending to be Law enforcers.
In another chilling case, there was a young jobseeker who fell into their wasp. He was called to Kathmandu, Nepal under the pretence of job offering and held as a money laundering subject. Nearly ₹49 lakh (~$58,680) was laundered under his name.
Scammers use Vitual Asset and fake identities to avoid any dropped footprints, but the transparency and traceability of the Blockchain platforms backfires at their strategy. The Cyber Unit with FIU closely monitors the suspicious transaction from wallets and traces the drift of the Stolen money. This resolves the identification of suspects and helps the authority to seize virtual assets.
Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Branch’s Senior investigator applauded the swift actions of organisation that helped instrumentally in the investigation process of the Digital Arrest Crypto Scam. The team of FUI played a critical role in the uncovering of wallet links with transaction chains, which led the law enforcers to bring down the scamming network. Added the importance of platforms like Binance in protecting future victims and evolving Vitual world dangers.
Leader of Binance’s Regional Growth & Ops for South Asia, Kushal Manupati emphasized on the structure of Blockchain stating it keeps track of every transaction, helpful for enforcement agencies. Also mention the commitment of Binance toward Fighting against financial crimes and providing safety to users. Platform keeps its transparency with compliance. The following case shows the powerful example of the Virtual asset secured networks. Digital Arrest Crypto Scam is not first and last so the need of upgrading systems with time is also important.
