SEC Security Futures Approval: Kalshi, Bitnomial, Coinbase Cleared

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission delivered a fresh SEC Security Futures Approval on September 8, 2026, acknowledging that KalshiEX LLC and Bitnomial Exchange have completed national securities exchange registration under Section 6(g) of the Exchange Act.

According to a post from Crypto Banter on X, Derivatives received the same acknowledgment. The filing covers security futures products only, meaning these venues are not turning into full stock exchanges like Nasdaq. Crypto Banter Official Tweet

As of this writing, it is one of the more notable crypto news today stories moving through Washington and across crypto news circles this week.

SEC Kalshi Security Futures Approval Explained

Section 6(g) Exchange Act rules let a board of trade already designated a contract market register with the SEC solely to trade security futures products.

This SEC Section 6(g) registration route, outlined in SEC release documents, skips the heavier compliance load a full stock exchange faces.

Kalshi SEC approval and Bitnomial security futures registration both followed this exact path, since both firms already hold CFTC designated contract market status.

Coinbase Derivatives SEC National Exchange Status

Coinbase Derivatives, LLC filed its own Form 1-N with the SEC on September 1, 2026, confirmed in Coinbase's own filing cover documents

An affiliate, Coinbase Financial Markets, Inc., filed a companion Form BD-N the same day to register as a security-futures-product broker-dealer.

The filing also appears in SEC EDGAR's public record, giving Coinbase Derivatives SEC status matching that of Kalshi and Bitnomial.

Key Filing Facts:

  • CFTC security futures oversight stays fully intact; the SEC role is narrow.

  • This adds to the wider crypto derivatives regulation 2026 trend already seen when CME completed a similar 6(g) filing in April 2026.

  • National securities exchange crypto access is now technically open to all three platforms for security futures only.

  • Bitnomial SEC Section 6(g) registration news follows its earlier CFTC-approved Bitcoin perpetual futures listing.

What Does SEC Security Futures Approval Mean for Crypto?

In short: it is a paperwork clearance, not a product launch. Can Kalshi Coinbase now list stock futures? Not yet.

The registration only unlocks eligibility; each exchange still needs to self-certify individual contracts with the CFTC before anything trades.

Expert Opinion

Market analysts note the SEC Security Futures Approval reflects a procedural step rather than a policy shift, since the underlying Section 6(g) framework has applied to other exchanges for years.

The move could still matter longer term if Kalshi, Bitnomial, or Coinbase Derivatives eventually list stock-linked contracts, though that remains speculative pending further CFTC filings.
