Coinbase to Convert MATIC into POL as Polygon Upgrades Its Network

The long- awaited Polygon Upgrades its token is here. Polygone’s original token, MATIC, has officially been replaced with POL, and Coinbase has shared details on how it will handle the transition for users.

Coinbase’ Migration Timeline

Coinbase confirmed that all MATIC held on its platform will be converted into POL-token between October 14 and 17, 2025. During this time, certain services will be paused:

• October 7 - staking and unstaking of MATIC-coin will stop.

• October 14 - trading of MATIC will be permanently disabled. 

• October 14 to 17 - Sending and Receiving MATIC-token will not be possible as balances are upgraded.

Coinbase also explained that staking rewards will not be earned during the migration period. For users who do not want their MATIC-token to be converted into POL, the exchange advised moving funds to self custody before October 14.

Why Polygon Is Upgrading to POL-Coin

Polygon is no longer just a single blockchain. The project is transforming into an aggregated network of blockchain, called Agglayer, where multiple chains work together. To support the vision, Polygon needed a token that goes beyond powering just one chain. 

Here comes POL-Coin, which is designed to power a growing inter-connected Web3 ecosystem. It is now the native gas and staking token of the platform's proof-of-stake (PoS) chain. Over time, POL is expected to play larger roles across the network ecosystem. 

How the New Asset is different from MATIC

The switch from Matic to POL is 1:1, so users will not face any value loss, but still there are some important changes.

• New Emission Model: POL introduces a 2% annual emission over the next 10 years. Half will go to validator rewards and the other half to community treasury. 

• Broader Utility: While Previous token is only for staking and transactions on PoS chain, New one will expand its use in aggregated network. 

• Backwards Compatibility: The upgrade is built to be seamless, so applications and users will not face any disruptions.

What This Mean For Users

For most of the users, no action is required. If you hold MATIC on coinbase, your tokens will automatically become POL during the October migration window. 

However, if you hold MATIC on Ethereum, you need to manually swap it to POL-token using the Polygon Portal. And if wallet users see their balance still show “MATIC”, don’t worry, as you just need to update settings for the token symbol - the actual tokens will already be POL.

This upgrade is seen as a major step in Polygon’s journey to becoming an aggregated Web3 ecosystem. POL-token is set to secure today’s Polygon PoS network and fuel the broader Agglayer network in the future.
