Ethereum News Today: ETH Whales Move Millions as 2029 Roadmap Emerges

Large wallets moved again on September 21, 2026. On-chain trackers flagged a $20 million buyback, an $86 million shift out of Bitcoin, and big derivatives bets on both sides of the market.

Meanwhile, protocol researchers shared a long technical plan. This Ethereum News roundup links the trades to the roadmap, so readers can separate what happened from what is still only proposed.

At a Glance

  • A trader who booked a $3.7M profit in August bought back 7,567 ether, worth about $20M, on September 21, 2026.

  • A separate whale swapped 1,107 BTC ($86.76M) for 34,422 Ether ($86.5M) and staked all of it.

  • Wintermute reportedly holds $159.88M in perpetual shorts, with a $3.57M unrealized loss.

  • Protocol researchers held an AMA on September 16 and set a target of a quantum-resistant L1 by December 2029.

  • Ethereum Price today is at $2670.77, surging 3.2% over 24 hours. Ethereum recorded about $13.92 billion in trading volume, while its market capitalization stood near $326 billion.

Whale Rebuys $20M in Ether After $3.7M August Profit

According to EmberCN and Lookonchain, trader 0x4cee sent 40 million USDC to Binance and withdrew 7,567 Ether, worth about $19.93 million, within one hour. The wallet bought roughly $21 million of the asset on July 21. On August 21, it sold 10,500 coins at an average of $2,252 for $23.64 million, a profit near $3.66 million.

Today's repurchase happened at a higher price than that sale. Most trades from this address landed on the 21st of a month. That is a curious pattern, but it is not a reliable signal for future price direction.

Mystery Whale Rotates $86M From Bitcoin Into Staked Ether

Lookonchain reports that another wallet sold 1,107 BTC on Hyperliquid over five days. It then bought 34,422 ether and staked every coin. This stands out because it is a rotation between two major assets, not fresh money entering the market. Staked coins are also locked in the validator system, so they are not immediately available for sale.

Wintermute Holds Nearly $160M in Perpetual Shorts

Onchain Lens says Wintermute holds about $159.88 million in perpetual short positions. Unrealized losses stand near $3.57 million, and 30-day trading volume is $16.91 billion.

Traders Show Diverging Positions as Prices Move Higher

Arkham highlighted trader 0x0c5, who holds a $29.6 million long on Hyperliquid (HYPE) at 20x leverage. The entry price is $2,482.2, and the position opened three weeks ago. It was down about $1.6 million four days ago. With the asset up 5.5% today, the trader is now up about $2.29 million.

Compare that with Wintermute's $53.05 million short. Large participants are clearly not aligned. High leverage also cuts both ways, since a small move against a 20x position can cause heavy losses.

Ethereum Foundation AMA Maps Out the Next Technical Phase

An ETHTAO analysis of the September 16 Protocol team AMA on Reddit covers several research tracks. These are targets and proposals at different stages, not finished upgrades.

Quantum resistance: The team aims for a quantum-resistant L1 by December 2029. That requires new account signatures, a replacement for BLS in consensus, and changes to KZG in data availability. Wallets, rollups and bridges must migrate on their own.

Account abstraction: Frame transactions would make verification logic programmable. Users could later move away from the original secp256k1 key. Vitalik compared one ECDSA signature at roughly 4,000 gas with 100,000 to 250,000 gas for a SPHINCS signature, so aggregation and proofs are needed to cut costs.

ZK-EVM: Work is moving through specifications, testing and client integration. EIP-8025, which adds optional execution proofs, is a key milestone for Hegotá. Justin Drake is optimistic about roughly two-second proofs for most blocks by 2027, while others stress gas limits and state growth as risks.

Privacy: Some researchers expect native privacy transactions by 2027. Drake gives a built-in privacy pool by the end of 2028 a probability close to zero.

Formal verification: Tools such as Lean, hax and Aeneas are helping check signature schemes and zkVM circuits, though end-to-end coverage is incomplete.

Finality: Ben Edgington expects finality to fall from about sixteen minutes to about four minutes early on, with a long-term goal of one or two slots.

Issuance Debate Remains Unresolved

Justin Drake and Anders Elowsson personally support changing the current issuance mechanism. They worry that staking rewards put growing pressure on non-staking holders and push users toward exchanges and liquid staking tokens.

The AMA did not decide to cut issuance or cap staking. Any change would need a clear design and wider community consensus. The Foundation's new structure, including the Access Layer, Ethlabs, and Ethereum Institutional, aims to improve collaboration across teams.

Conclusion

Today's Ethereum News shows three themes at once: large accumulation, opposing leveraged bets, and a long research roadmap. None of them guarantees a bullish or bearish result. Readers should watch whether new whale buying continues, how leveraged positions hold up, and whether the issuance debate moves toward a formal proposal.
