Gold Forecast: XAU/USD Key Target Levels

Gold ETF holdings just hit their highest level in at least months, and one report is asking whether that means gold could surge past $5,000.

Price, meanwhile, is trading at $4,347.20, down 0.70% today, pulling back inside a steep channel.

This Gold Forecast looks at the ETF story behind that $5,000 question and what the chart itself is projecting.

Market data checked on September 21, 2026.

Gold News Today: Are Gold Prices Heading to $5,000?

Global gold ETF holdings have climbed to roughly 100 million ounces, near their highest level in at least nine months, and up over 4 million ounces since their July low, more than reversing the decline seen between April and July.

Gold-backed ETFs have also logged eight consecutive daily inflows, their longest streak since October 2025.Gold News Today: Are Gold Prices Heading to $5,000?

Here's the thesis behind the $5,000 talk: gold prices moved roughly in line with ETF holdings up until mid-August this year, then started to lag behind.

If price eventually catches up with how much holdings have already grown, the argument goes, it could push gold above $5,000 in the coming months.

This is an analytical thesis based on ETF flow data, not a confirmed forecast, and the timeline isn't specified.

How the Russia-Ukraine War Could Effect Gold Breakout

Oil is a big swing factor here, and the war is pushing it around right now. Ukrainian drone strikes have taken out a large chunk of Russia's refining capacity, and that's helped push diesel and gasoline prices to record highs this month.

Here's why that matters for gold. If oil keeps climbing, it stokes inflation worries, and that tends to keep bond yields and the dollar firm, both of which work against gold. In that kind of environment, this breakout could easily lose steam or stall out altogether.

But if the war cools down and oil prices come back down with it, inflation fears usually ease too, and yields tend to drop along with them. That's the exact backdrop that's been helping gold climb lately, so a calmer oil market would make the path toward $5,005.34 a lot more believable.

Put simply: falling oil is good news for this breakout and the $5,000 story. Rising oil, driven by how the war plays out, is the biggest risk hanging over it right now.

Gold Technical Analysis

Gold spiked to a high near $4,700 in early September, then pulled back sharply inside a descending channel and is now consolidating around $4,347.20 after opening at $4,374.31 and dipping to $4,339.90.Gold Technical Analysis

Interestingly, the chart's own measured-move projection points to a 13.84% move from here, which would put gold right at $5,005.34, lining up almost exactly with the $5,000 level the ETF thesis is pointing toward.

The 200-period EMA sits at $4,320.16, just below the current price, acting as near-term support during this consolidation.

The key level to watch is the $4,394 resistance. For gold to move toward the $5,000 level, it first needs to break above this resistance and sustain the breakout.

If gold demand remains strong and the price continues to hold above $4,394, the chart setup could support further upside toward $5,000. However, a rejection at $4,394 would weaken the bullish setup and could lead to another pullback.

Gold price Forecast: Support

$4,320.16 is the EMA support to watch first. Below that, $4,257.51 and $4,197.63 mark the deeper levels.

Gold Outlook: Resistance

$4,394.87 is the nearest resistance. Clearing it opens the path toward $4,502.15, then $4,701.38, and the chart's projected $5,005.34 target further out.

Gold Price Prediction: Can Gold Reach $5,000?

It's possible, and notably, both the ETF holdings thesis and the chart's own measured-move projection point to roughly the same area.

That said, gold would need to clear $4,502.15 and $4,701.38 first, so it's a multi-stage move over months, not something the current chart supports happening immediately.

Gold Price Prediction 2026: Expert View

According to CoinGabbar analysts, What stands out here is that two very different approaches, a fundamental ETF-flow thesis and a pure technical projection, are both landing close to $5,000.

That doesn't make it guaranteed, but it's a more interesting alignment than either signal would be on its own. $4,502.15 is the level that would start confirming this path is actually underway.
