Pi Network News: Protocol 28 Arrives as PI Price Slips

Pi Network News: Protocol 28, 2026 Upgrade List, and Price Today

Pi Network News today centers on a firm date. Mainnet will switch to Protocol 28 on October 16, 2026. Node operators must upgrade by October 13, according to the Pi Core Team. Testnet already runs the new version. Meanwhile, PI trades near $0.08925, down 2.12% in 24 hours.

At the same time, the official Pi 2026 upgrades table raises an important question: Is Protocol 28 the last upgrade? The official node table now ends at version 28.0.

Pi Network News Today: What Protocol 28 Changes for Node Operators

Protocol 28 follows the finished Protocol 27 rollout. The Mainnet API now reads version 27. The Testnet API already shows version 28.

Pi runs a customized version of the Stellar network. This update follows Stellar's own Protocol 28. It brings three changes:

  • Delay handling: validators can start voting before every transaction detail reaches every node.

  • Batch upgrades: developers can update groups of linked smart contracts in one step.

  • Safer data changes: apps can edit stored data with less risk of contracts getting stuck.

These are back-end tools, not new features for everyday users. Most existing contracts stay compatible. The node upgrade guide marks the 27.1 to 28.0 step as in progress. Downtime is expected to stay under five minutes.

Pi Network Upgrades 2026: From Protocol 23 to the October 16 Switch

The year has brought a steady run of mandatory updates.

  • May: Protocol-23 added Soroban smart contract support

  • July: Protocol-25 brought new cryptography tools

  • August: Protocol-26 improved contract security

  • September: Protocol-27 reached Mainnet

  • October 16: Protocol-28 is scheduled

The Core Team described v27 as the final planned upgrade in the 2026 catch-up cycle. That cycle aimed to bring Mainnet level with recent protocol features.

Yet v28 already sat on the node path. The Pi network roadmap 2026 therefore reads as ongoing upkeep. The current table ends at 28.0, and no higher version is listed.

Is Protocol 28 the Last Upgrade? What the Node Table Really Shows

The node upgrade guide lays out a fixed path. It runs from 19.1 through 27.1 and ends at 28.0.

Pi Node Upgrades Table

  • 26.1 to 27.1: completed on September 15, 2026

  • 27.1 to 28.0: upgrade in progress, deadline October 13, 2026

  • Beyond 28.0: no version listed

That is the full picture in Pi Network News right now. The table has no version 29. Still, an empty row is not a promise. No Core Team post says development is closed.
Possibly it could be the upgrades table for 2026 only or specifically for node updates. Nothing is clarified and confirmed officially.

Pi Ecosystem in 2026: Launchpad Tokens Section and Pi DEX Groundwork

This Pi Network News item covers the ecosystem side. The official Pi BlockExplorer now has a Launchpad Tokens section on Mainnet. It lists no tokens yet. Testnet examples IRRA and SLICE show how the system may work.

Under the Pi Launchpad model, funds committed by participants go into a liquidity pool paired with the new token.

Protocol 27 also laid groundwork for swaps and liquidity pools. Official Pi DEX tools remain in testing. The Core Team is also still fixing KYC and Mainnet migration issues for hundreds of thousands of users. Independent apps fill part of the gap, though users should treat them as third-party tools.

Pi Price Down Today: Volume Falls As Broader Market Slides

Pi Network price today down about 2.12% following the wider crypto market slip of 1.56%. Data from CoinMarketCap shows:

Pi Network price today

  • Price: $0.08925, down 2.12% in 24 hours

  • Market cap: $1B, down 2.12%

  • 24-hour volume: $6.91M, up 0.5%

  • Fully diluted value: $8.91B

  • PI all-time high: $2.98 (Feb 2025)

  • Circulating supply: 11.24B of 100B PI

The crypto token price dip follows a softer market. The BTC price fell 1.34%, and total crypto market value slid 1.56%. Low turnover can exaggerate moves. Token unlocks of roughly 6.5 million PI also add steady supply, which can cap rallies.

What’s Next?

The October 13 deadline for users to complete the upgrade sets the stage for the planned Mainnet launch on October 16. A smooth Mainnet switch on that date would mark the next major step in the 2026 upgrade roadmap.

Real usage, from Launchpad tokens to DEX activity, must then follow before price reflects it. Pi Network News from here will hinge on that gap between infrastructure and demand.

(PI is a volatile asset and can lose value fast. Official updates on minepi.com remain the safest check.)
