Investors connect their own wallet, contribute funds, and receive tokens instantly once the sale contract executes, often with trading enabled within minutes of the sale ending.
Many IDOs use a lottery or tiered allocation system based on how many governance tokens a participant holds on the launchpad, which helps distribute access more fairly than a first-come-first-served rush.

The project partners with an exchange, which reviews the team, the token model, and the legal documentation before agreeing to host the sale.
Investors must already hold an account on that exchange to participate, and they usually buy tokens directly through the exchange's interface rather than a separate smart contract.
Once the sale ends, the token is typically listed on that same exchange right away, giving buyers immediate liquidity.
This model reduces a lot of the anonymity and scam risk seen in early ICOs, since the exchange has a reputation to protect and performs its own screening before agreeing to host a project.
That screening is not free.
Exchanges usually charge listing fees, and access can be gated behind holding the exchange's native token, which favors users who are already active on that specific platform.
Pros: exchange-level vetting reduces scam risk, immediate listing and liquidity after the sale, a simpler process for investors already on the exchange, and stronger brand trust than an anonymous ICO.
Cons: access is often limited to existing exchange users, listing fees and exchange requirements raise costs for projects, centralized control over which projects get approved, and exchange reputation does not guarantee project success.

An ICO puts full trust in the project team with almost no outside check.
An IDO puts trust in code and a decentralized protocol, which is transparent but not always screened.

For an investor who values transparency and wants to avoid custodial risk, an IDO on a well-known launchpad is generally the stronger choice, since the process is verifiable on-chain and trading access is immediate.
For someone who prioritizes safety and prefers a vetted project with a recognizable name behind the sale, an IEO on an established exchange is the more dependable route, even though it comes with less openness and higher entry requirements.
